Grinding noise while breaking

    Lately when Im slowing down I am getting this grinding noise from the breaks, is this really bad? SHould I get it serviced. I just bought it second hand a few weeks ago, seemed fine but now this noise is here, any advice?

    Sounds like worn pads, replace them ASAP as you may be damaging your discs.

    Does the car have alloy wheels? If so then this may simply be a combination of brake dust and every day dirt that builds up. If it happens every single time you use the brakes then it may be that you have worn brake pads. Best get it checked out by someplace that specialises in brakes/shocks. Either your own mechanic or a place like Kwik-Fit.

    Depends on the car but not very expansive. Got set of front pads for CRX for 25 euro( pads only)

    alloy wheel dust thing always happens to me - lightly run a cloth between the disc and wheel seems to fix it!

    metallic "grinding" usually means the pad material is completely work away and you have metal pad backing plate to disk contact. (course you might be lucky and very worn pada & disks, so only the edges are contacting.)
    Either way, take the wheel off and inspect the pads for linings >1/8" (3mm).
    Pads are inexpensive, disks are ~100Each OEM. use aftermarket if the car is old.
    You can reuse scored disks, depending on the degree and overall flatness.... just takes a while longer for the pads to bed in.
    I don't recommend grinding/turning them as this thins them and then they warp even faster.... eitehr re-use or replace.

    Probably what it is is the small metal clips that sit on each side of the brake pads, when the brake pads need replacing the little tabs will touch the disc, it doesn't do any harm but just lets you know its time to replace them.
    They are designed that way.

    Except those little jiggers usually "squeek/scrape" not grind.

    Some cheap aftermarked pads skip these little items to save a ¢ or two.

    And if correct.. it still means new pads required.
