RAM upgrade question...

New lappy arrives this week and I'm looking to add some more memory. I've read some places that it is quicker to have both sticks "paired" ie. equal amounts of MB in each slot.

So is this true? My desktop has 512 and 256 in each slot respectively and I can't say I ever noticed a difference, but that was an upgrade from 256 only so I have nothing to guage it on.
The laptop has 256mb installed and 512mb total is probably adequate for what I'll be using it for. However the price of 256 as compared to 512 make the 512 much better value and will mean I have more than ample RAM.
    Anyone?

Not necessarily but it could be the case, what laptop? What ram? How many slots for ram in total? How much ram are you getting initially with the laptop and how many of those slots is it taking up? info please, lots of it!

It's usually best not to fill all your ram slots in general but you're not giving us much to go on there, care to elaborate? :)

Dell inspiron 8500, coming with 256mb 266mhz DDR, and one other empty slot.
Another stick of matching 256 is gonna cost me €51 or I could get the 512 for €95.

Or I could buy dodgy RAM on eBay  :p
