More details.. How is the desktop connected to the net? Are you sure the SP2 firewall is disabled? (It's on by default).

The desktop is connected to the net via a dial up connection! sorry for leaving that out! yes the sp2 firewall is disabled!

Run the Home Network Wizard and select the desktop as the internet gateway and the laptop as a computer on the network and connect to the internet through a gateway on the network.

Then make sure that in your internet connection properties that your allowing other computers to connect through the desktops internet connection

    Let me think now...

    Main PC connected via Dialup.
Second PC connecting to main PC via ethernet switch.

So, what i did in my setup (which is exactly the same for all intents and purposes) is disable windows built in ICS and installed Kerio Winroute Firewall. Then ran the configuration wizard, and had the sharing working within minutes. Unfortunately it ain't a free app, but its worth a shot.

I've never dabbled with windows' ICS. I've heard bad things about it. It can be a bitch to get working.

    Client for ms networks,
    service advertisin protocol,
    file and printer sharing,
    QoS packet schedular,
    NWlink netbios,
    NWlink ipx/spx/netbios,
    internet protocol (TCP/IP)

have you set the two PC's to the same subnet mask?

I.e. pc 1 (main pc) should have:
    IP 195.168.0.1
    Subnet: 255.255.0.0

    PC2:
    IP: 195.168.0.2
    Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Gateway address (And dns address): 195.168.0.1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

What does the laptop do when you try to get up a webpage on it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

    pc2 is the laptop.

Ok, well i can't help any more other than suggesting you use Kerio Winroute firewall, with those settings. That would be my setup exactly. Except i have broadband, not dialup :P

Set the IP of your main PC to 192.168.0.1 and the other pc to 192.168.0.2 and the subnet mask on both of them to 255.255.255.0.

Run the ICS wizard on the main machine again, but don't use the create floppy disk part.

Remove NWlink netbios and NWlink ipx/spx/netbios from both computers.

Now on the second computer set the Default Gateway to 192.168.0.1 and presto (hopefully)!!!

On your laptop, 2nd PC, You shouldn't be using the desktop pc's IP as DNS, you should be using your isp's. Try 159.134.237.6 eircoms main dns server. You should be able to get the details for your ISP from the web.
