Try using klitecodecpack. It's got codecs for almost everything. You can get it from here

Get a little programme called G-Spot (Yes that's the name) Install it, load it up and drag the video file in question onto it. It will tell you the Video and Audio codecs that you need for the video file. You can then do a search online for said codecs and install. G-spot has helped me alot with Divx issues etc.

Whats the name of the file?

K lite has everything even has that matroska thingy in it now , so if that dont play it maybe a corrupt movie or a new kinda codec. The codec name is usually in the title if its an ehhh acquired movie ie "Oceans 12 cam pot svcd"

yes its an acquired movie coug cough new pixar pic

no mention of codec in title just an avi file

When I load it up to G-spt it has

codec (_RGB) Name I_RGB Raw Bitmap
    Stat No Codec Required

Have other movie files and work ok dont know if this one is corrupt ?

Should play would check out that sound card thing above , reinstall the drivers for it if possible.

I have that cough cough 1.4gbs movie. Works fine on pc but refuses to play on Divx player convinced its an new codec as it usually plays everything. But all garbled on the player.

Might be a DivX file with GMC or QPel, kdjac. They're two settings that can be enabled when making a divx or xvid file. They improve quality but need more horsepower to decode, hence the tv top player not being able to handle them.

I do get that on my divx dvd player but i find that if i go into the system settings and change it from pal to ntsc and back again it works and looks alright. Strange, eh?

No dude i was only talking about those files with a higher bit rate. You can get DVD players these days that'll play Divx files.
