How to assess if speed attained is quality.

    Folks,

    I'm running IBB Breeze 1MB.

I would like to assess if the speeds I'm attaining are good quality.

Can someone advise what I should do?

I imagine I need to ping a site such as boards.ie and assess the feedback from that?

But I'm unsure what I'm looking for.

    Thanks for reply dub45.

    I'm getting 115170 cps here http://homepage.tinet.ie/~leslie/testpage.htm

Is that a reliable test? And is that a good speed?

jbkenn, ended up with 48kbps, which doesn't warm the heart.

I also pinged boards.ie and got this... does this shed any light can anyone advise, I'm not quite sure what it's telling me.

Pinging boards.ie [82.195.131.130] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=72ms TTL=57
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=97ms TTL=57
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=71ms TTL=57
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=114ms TTL=57

    Ping statistics for 82.195.131.130:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 71ms, Maximum = 114ms, Average = 88ms

That's bad. Do "tracert boards.ie" and you'll see the path to boards.ie and it'll tell you where the latency problem is.

    Thanks for advice Blaster99.

Here's my tracert. I thought I was pointing to Ballymun POP, but I see no reference to that here. I'm in Beaumont myself.

What does the following tell you?

    Tracing route to boards.ie [82.195.131.130]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 83.141.75.65
    2 32 ms 23 ms 22 ms 62.231.49.182
    3 29 ms 60 ms 23 ms tallaght-et-1-7.irishbroadband.ie [62.231.32.145
    ]
    4 31 ms 35 ms 87 ms 62.231.52.229
    5 15 ms 25 ms 42 ms panama-inex.hosting365.ie [193.242.111.87]
    6 82 ms 97 ms * sneezy.hosting365.ie [82.195.133.195]
    7 39 ms 43 ms 85 ms boards.ie [82.195.131.130]
    8 20 ms 30 ms 47 ms boards.ie [82.195.131.130]

    Trace complete.

Be prepared for dissapointment with IBB - download speeds are very poor - I've been keeping records for a month now and the average I get on an advertised 1mb line is about 350/350 - the best I've had in the last month is about 480/640

pings variably are about 80 - 120 - though some nights are horror show with spikes (every 30 secs or so) to unplayable - varying 250 - 999 with timeouts all over the shop...

If I ha a choice I'd switch, but my phone line wont take DSL and eircom are too incomptent to provide a line that can - even if I offer to buy it! My exchange is about 200 metres away and ports are available... can I get an anser from eircom as to why I can't get DSL? You're having a laugh....

Dr Bolouswki... you picked that name cos it was hard to spell right... how could I make these speed calculations for myself on my own connection?

I'm not so sure that tracert is saying you're connected to Tallaght. I'm guessing you have a PC connected straight to the PoE adapter, no router right? So 83.141.75.65 is presumably the mast which means your pings to the mast are very good. You're two hops from the Tallaght node it looks like. It looks to me as if IBB's internal network can't deal with the traffic. If I ping 83.141.75.65 I get pings in around 100ms and I'm on IBB's network too. I get 25ms pings to boards.ie on the other hand. Some interesting stuff going on in that network of IBB's, eh.

    Spot on.

What node you connected to, and what's its IP so I can ping and report back?

    http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

is the speed test I use most often - but I think any of the ones listed in other posts and anything you can find on google is fine...

i jsut ping the same servers - varying between bbc.co.uk, jolt.co.uk and google.ie - I figure using these servers is best as they will be high use, best equipped servers, thus not allowing IBB to come back at me saying that the ping response times could be due to the sites I'm pinging...

to be honest, online gaming is my thing, and at the moment I'm getting by with IBB - its fine more often than not (ping usually 60-100 or thereabouts), but my download speeds are poor, so the odd time that I'm downloading large updates or map-packs or whatever i get a bit plssed off, because my ostensibly 1mb line is far from that....

I'm working off the guinness mast from IBB... unless a viable alternative comes up I've no choice but to stick with them - if they had advertised my speed as 500/500, I wouldn't have much cause for complaint - its because I'm getting less than half the speed I've paid for that I'm annoyed with them...

All that said, the one time I've emailed them so far they rang me the very next day... the record keeping is just so I am armed with something if IF a viable alternative connection opportunity comes my way...
