Computer was fine up until today (dell 8300 running XP) when i noticed that my wireless mouse started moving as if it was a ball mouse which was dirty, slow incomplete movements etc. Rebooted the computer and ran norton (expired end of november) which found nothing but while i was running the scan my screen became filled with tiny progress bars, obscuring the screen but would go away if i opened a new window or kept scrolling on the old one. Did a system restore to yesterday and the only thing I did today was download a windows media update and move some mp3s over to my PDA, looking for my mouse install disc to remove and re-install in the hope that that might be it but in the meantime could any of you help me?

    Thanks in advance

Try get an uptodate Anti Virus scanner, try AVG. Then boot the pc in safe mode and run a scan see if it finds anything.

Also have a look at the running process to see if there is anything strange there.

You can always get one of the online scanners for AVG or Symantec just to be sure.
