I was in ADLI in Finglas yesterday (it's new and is just beside LIDL)- they still have quite a few 250Gb Western Digital drives left. According to www.digitalspy.co.uk these work fine with SKY+ - pity I'd already upgraded to a 120Gb disc (which is plenty big anyway!) If you have any experience tinkering with PC innards the a SKY+ disc upgrade is a cinch.

Thay also had at least one TV tuner card left and a MP3 player player that uses SD cards.

You do get increased disc noise from the upgraded disk.

I've got a Hitachi Desk star disc - no major no noise problems. i believe you can run acoustic managment utilities for maxtor discs. Not sure about the ALDI ones

I have a samsung 120GB. I have noticed more noise since the upgrade. There are no utilities with the samsung to change the acoustic management.

Is the noise only increased when fast forwarding/rewinding?

The noise is constant regardless of what is going on. It appears that the fan is running all the time.

How much are they -the 250gb disks?

Ooops forgot to give the price €130 which seems pretty good.

That is a good price, but disk prices are falling all the time anyhow.

On Komplett you can get that drive for about €150 plus 10 delivery. Give it another few months and it'll be the same price.

Anyhow, regarding the noise from an upgraded disk, I just replied to another thread where I mentioned this. It is a common problem with upgrading the disk. Even though the drive may be cooler than the original (and it's almost certainly quieter) somehow the firmware believes the cooling fan needs to be on all the time. I resolved it by removing the expansion panel at the back of the Sky+ box, placing a PC case 8cm fan there, powered by 3V (so it's slower and quieter), and then disconnecting the internal fan.

    Ix.

Surely it is no harm for the internal fan to be on?

I upgraded with the 250 GB Aldi hard disk last week - its working fine
so far - don't notice any increase in the noise level - very happy and good value at €130

No harm for the fan to be on, but possibly annoying depending on your hearing and on how fussy you are.

    Unfortunately, I am fussy...

The internal fan is not that noisy really.
