Hi all, first post, so here goes.

Just bought a new Dell with Windows XP (SP2) installed and when I went to use my online banking (Ulster Bank "Anytime" banking) I can't log in. The status bar in IE gives the following error:

    load: class UBSign.class not found

I have already downloaded the latest Java from Sun (version 1.4.2_06) but this hasn't helped.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like thats a problem with the site, to me... Not a lot you can do about it short of an email to the banks IT department in charge of the site.

God that was fast! Thanks for that. I'll give them a bell and see what they have to say.

The problem is that when you sign up initially for Ulster Bank online or internet banking they put a mark ( for want of a better word) on your pc and each time subsequently the site look for it. There is stuff on their FAQ about this. If you want to use Ulster Bank from other computers you have to save and bring this mark with you. The solution is to register again. It only takes a minute or two - give them a buzz they will put you onto the 'secret line' and a new passphrase and so on is generated.

Infini, I just tried Firefox. Some success! Classes loaded but I just got another error (I'll explain below).

dub45, I have been on to Ulster Bank and told them my situation (ie: new pc...) and they issued me with a new code to re-register on the new machine. This is the stage I'm at now, trying to re-register. IE fails to load the UBSign.class so I am stopped in my tracks straight away. Firefox, however, loads the classes as it needs them but then at the very end of the registering process I get a 'JavaApplication' error telling me the registration was not successful, but with no apparent explanation!

I can feel it my bones, this one's gonna get me!!

there is the possiblitly that the site is not geared for Firefox although it does work with some versions of netscape.

There should be no difficulty at all in getting set up again - I had to do it recently after I reinstalled xp. I wonder though if java is installed at all?
Isnt there something about microsoft no longer including their own version of java. Why not try downloading java again just to be sure?

yeah i had a similar problem, my boss wanted fixing,
ended up having to install an old copy of microsoft jvm..
which worked..dont know if its the same bank/problem but you could give it a try

    Success at last!!

Not sure what fixed it but Firefox just allowed me to register and then log-in successfully so I'm happy with that. No intention of using IE anyway, Firefox has been my browser of choice for ages. I just thought Ulster Bank didn't support it yet. Just goes to show!!

I decided to uninstall anything to do with Java then go again but when I brought up the add/remove programs window in XP it showed that there were two versions of Java runtime environment installed so I removed the older one (1.4.2_03 I think?). Not sure if that was the problem because IE is still showing Java errors so there is still something not right. But like I said, it's working and I'm happy so let's run with that!

Thanks a lot for all your help folks. A successful first post!
