Problem with external hdd

I bought an external casing and bought an 200GB Maxtor ATA 133 hdd. I install everything and connect using firewire. Then I had disk management to identify it. Now, whenever I connect it to my pc, I can type anything. My typing goes real slow and miss some letters that I am typing. Anyone knows why and how to fix this?

    Thanks.

I have fixed the above problem and now I have a new one.

I just formated my pc and want to get the stuff I transfered to my external HDD. When I go to Disk Management, it says my external drive is RAW. When I tried converting it to NTFS, it says drive is already in NTFS. Eitherway, I cant seem to explore/open the contents of my external HDD. Is there a way I can retrive in data on my external hdd?

probably not going to solve your problem, but just to cancel out the possibility that your firewire might be a problem connect the hd directly to your mobo (ide) and try it

Tried that and still getting the errors :(

if its external on firewire does the jumpers have to be set at all?

Sorry for sounding such a noob, what do you mean by jumper?

well im not sure how it would be set for external drives, but for internal drives theres a blue or black plastic cap on the back of the hd beside the ide slot that can be moved to different positions to tell the mobo whether the drive is master or slave

    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/cabling/16hds.gif

the correct setting would be labelled on the drive

Have you actually formatted this external hd for use ?

If not have a look at this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000

External harddrive should be set to master.
    Like this:

    |:.: <-- jumper on the first two pins

Other people have had problems like this after reinstalling XP. Try this program to recover the partition: http://www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html

If that doesn't work you could use some data recovery software to transfer the data onto your other disk and then format it again.

I think it is set as master. So thats not the problem.
I do have date software recovery but unfortunately it doesnt detect all the data and of course it doesnt detect the ones I want the most lol.
Cant seem to run the test disk thing.

in all likelyhood you don't need something to recover the data, you need something to recover the partition table. if you haven't reformatted the drive that's most likely all thats fooked.

have a look here for some useful info that might get your stuff back: http://www.ntfs.com/partition-recovery-concepts.htm
