Replace ps2 or fix?

Recently my ps2 has been getting disc read errors on games (mainly gta:sa  ). Just wondering if it would be better to replace it or if it's possible to get it fixed somewhere. I seem to recall somewhere where you could send off the playstation to and they would generally fix it up and tweak the laser a bit or something (I could have just dreamt that though). Alternatively someone told me the price of ps2s were down quite a bit - I heard 130-150 euro. Is there anything in that? Also i'm pretty sure my warranty is out since I bought mine the first christmas it came out.

    Thanks

i got a broken one of my mate which he was going to toss out, reading the same disc error. I opened it up and moved the lens using the little wheel at the back so it would read the pit in the cd and it worked. Now i have a ps2 that i didnt have to pay a penny for, and it works great, heres a link to a tutorial below. Clicky here make sure to read it all, best of luck :)

OK thanks that was just what I was looking for, although someone else doing it would at least enable me to blame someone when it breaks. :) Thanks

That disc read error is connected more so to the actual disc than your ps2. I was getting it very often after a few days once it came out so i replaced the game and all was fine. For some reason the gta:sa discs are prone to getting scratched while they are spinning. If this is the only game it happens in then leave your ps2 alone. (my ps2 is the same age as yours so thats not the prob)

I'm also 100% sure it's not a problem with the disc. I just made a thorough inspection and there are no scratches or anything on it, and i've left the game running for periods of 2 days without problems. I got this problem the first time I put in the disc, but I just opened and closed the disctray until it read it (after about 5 tries). Only reason i'm posting is that this isn't working now, because I spent 25 minutes opening and closing the damn tray last night. :/
