You need to put the boot loader on /dev/hda

MBR = Master Boot Record, and thats definately where you want the bootloader. So your boot sequence ends up being.

Computer on -> Bootloader -> Choice of OS

    rather than

computer on -> Windows' Bootloader ->Windows.

anyone i have talked to said def don't put it on the mbr, I've been told that windows xp and antivirus don't like it there

Put it in the MBR. It's the first place your PC will look for a boot loader and theres no strong reason not to place it there. Also, Windows by default places it's boot loader in the MBR.

Well, i just reinstalled Debian again today, an one of the options was to install either Grub or Lilo.

So, as usual, i installed Grub. The next screen showed a list of detected OS's (i.e. Win XP) and asked if it was a complete list. If it was a complete list, the ideal option to choose would be to install the bootloader into the MBR, which i did. And now everythings ok.
