no power on self test

I bought the parts for a pc last summer with the intention of putting it together myself for a friend(having done it a few times before). After assembling it the first time, the comp did not post/power on the monitor. I thought it was the graphics card & tried 2 other suitable agp cards that do work(as they are from my own pc & an older pc). When these did not work I thought it might have been the psu so I tried 2 other psu's(1 of which definitly works) but no change. Also the power LED on the motherboard was on. I had narrowed the problem down to the ram, mobo or cpu. I was able to test the ram in my own pc & it worked with no problems. I had no way to test the cpu or mobo so I decided to send them back to komplett. After waiting the 2-4 weeks for them to be tested they came back saying there was no problem(apart from the fan on gpu was hangin off which they fixed). When I took the cpu out of its packaging, one of the pins was bent, so after spending awhile browsing the internet I decided to straighten the pin myself(with great care). When I put it all back together it still would not post/power on monitor.
At this point I really lost interest in the whole thing as it had taken 3 months & still the same problem. Over the next few months I bough a new cpu to test it out, & finally got around to testing it yesterday. Needless to say it still will not post. I'm kinda lost now as to what to do apart from sending it all back. I have no idea what to do as I have tried everything that I can to get it working but it still refuses to post/power on monitor/system beeps. I would really appreciate any ideas as to why it won't power on the monitor....

    Can't offer much advice except:
Make sure the case power button is hooked up properly. That happened me on my first build, had the two leads the wrong way around. :)

Its been in 3 different cases so far & the pwr switch has been connected every single way possible.
Another note is that when it is powered on all the fans work just no post

this might seem stupid but it did catch me once. Check the fdd ribbon is in the right way around on the drive and board. I've got ribbons that weren't keyed and if it's in the wrong way the fdd lights comes on solid and no post.

put in pci card bios may be set default vga pci display take antistatic precaution.ie possible bios may be set agp vgadisplay display ,does keyboard light up when u turn on pc, way to test mobo,, put in win98 se boot disk drive a: if it trys to load it takes 4mins to 5mins cdrom drivers etc mobo prbly ok, pess del or f1 fkeys to get to bios.or but bootable cdrom into cdromdrive eg win98,leave hd disconnected connected grafix card and floopy and cdrom,, if u have bad ide wronglyconnected ide sumwhere wrongjumper on a harddrive or cdrom it will stop pc from booting or even dispaying post,,tell me how u geton ill checkthis thread 2moro.

bios can reset to defaults or pcivga this happened to me hadto use pcicardto install win98 and then lastly i turned on vga enabled agp in bios, agp cud be disabled,if mobo is ok itll send out vga on any old vga car atall.tell me what happened after u tryd this procedure.most people assume mobo dead cos they see u display, or try another monitor if u have 1 handy.

Do you have diagnostic leds? Or possibly a diagnostic buzzer? There has to be some sort of warning being given.

Theres the LED on the motherboard which lights up basically saying that there is power there. As for the diagonstic beeps, the motherboard an ASUS A7N8X-E uses vocal post messages instead of a system of beeps. I have the speaker connector hooked up but I have never heard a sound out of it
I've used the diagonstic beeps system on other pc's to troubleshoot problems before but I have not heard a squeak out of this motherboard.

As I said before I have been trying to get it workin with the bear minimum installed ie only cpu, ram, mobo, psu & agp card......i've even tried to get it working outside the case as I thought that it might have been causing the problem.

Thx for all the replies...please keep them coming I really need to get this problem sorted before I go into hospital again, my friend might not even visit me because of this :(

Unplug the machine and take out the cmos battery for half an hour,

sometimes when i move my pc around, say into another room, it fails to boot, like you said the fans will work but no post and the monitor won't wake up from standby, when this happens i have to reset the bios and then it works fine
