Backing up and syncing files

Hi,
My dad uses sage and wants to use a whole pc just for the purpose of a backup incase his laptop is stolen etc. I'm trying to tell him to use a USB pen device to store the files on. Is there a way to sync files he may put on this with the files on the laptop? If he edits certain files does he have to replace the original on the pen device or is there a way to automatically sync pen files to laptop? These are important files so it must be secure and safe to do.

Also, where is the best place to buy pen drives? Are all retail shops generally priced the same as the likes of komplett.ie or are they far more expensive? Any brands to opt for or avoid?
