    hi i am using partition magic to try and create a partition to put fedora core 3 on but it keeps giving the messages too many errors I have run defrag so i have no idea whats wrong?

    When you're installing Fedora should partition the drive for you.
    As always be sure and backup your data first.

    Not if you put it after the XP partition, it should move any data thats down there up before it goes altering the file system. But if you wanted to be safe, you could download a copy of O&O Defrag and run a Space defragmentation first.

    on the knoppix bootable CD you can also use ntfsresize to shrink an NTFS partition, of course defrag first as it won't move the files and stops when it finds a file. make sure you have your XP cd in case you need to boot.

    backup your hard drives boot sector/partition table - see the info in man gpart to be on the safe side.

    then you can use qtparted to generate a new linux partion
