Being the idiot that I am, I ordered a DVD from America and it's NTSC so it won't play on my DVD player. I'm hoping there's some free software that will let me play it on my computer. And would it be possible to rip the DVD onto my computer, convert it to PAL and then put it back onto DVD?

you may be able to get a region converter code on the web for the dvd player - what make and model is it??
There is some free software - eg mplayer, videolan etc etc. should have gotten some SW with your dvd drive though
yes it's possible to rip it, deregionise it and burn it, assuming you have a burner. The problem is not that it's NTSC or PAL, but that it's got a region code which the player won't let you play. If you have an old TV then the NTSC/PAL issue will surface, cos it may not be able to display NTSC in color- only black and white.

Ah yes I have VLC player and it works fine. Copying the DVD and making it region free would probably be a lot of work. I'll just watch it on my computer.

ASSUMING THE DVD IS A SINGLE LAYER DISC OR YOU HAVE A DUAL LAYER BURNER!
Copy it with DVDecrypter in ISO mode and then reburn the ISO with DVDecrypter (or whatever you like)
DVDecrypter removes the region protection among other things.

    What DVD player you got?
Might be possile to remove the region with a hack using remote.

DVD shrink will copy it and remove the region encoding, but it will have to compress the quality. As was mentioned about older TV's it may play in black and white. To convert from NTSC properly involves expensive equipment and isn't really an option.

I don't think it's dual layer. It doesn't say on it. I have DVD decrypter and DVD Shrink installed from ages ago but I've never used them. My DVD player is a Hyundai DVD-320A. I'm gonna google that now.

Yeah I found them already thanks. I just have to press 7, 7, 1 to change to region 1 and 7, 7, 2 to change back. :)
