well for the games it should not make any difference
but dvd-r is probably best as its cheaper
some dvd players might not be able to read dvd-r but from my experiance most do

thanks...any idea which brand is most popular...???...

Whichever you can get good media for cheaply which usually means -R, the media is generally cheaper and there is more variety.
Compatibility is not a big problem with either, most players will either play both or neither.

For copying discs there is no difference between the finished copy on either format bar the compatibility with players, the data is identical.

The only place a big difference is found is with the standalone dvd video recorders and the way they record to the discs.

ya shipping canbe high if you are only ordering 1 pack
it should still work out at less than 1 euro a disc though

They are much better value if you buy in bulk. You can get about 500 disks and 200 cases for the same shipping cost as 25 disks.
They have very cheap prices for media but Irish shipping costs are very high especially for small orders. UK shipping for the same orders are next to nothing.

now hold on a second! Dont but ANYTHING without checking the mediacode on the discs. The most important thing about DVD's is not the name on the box, but the manufacturer who actualy made the disc. PRODISC discs are genearlly quite good for DVD+R.

The besy thing to do is get the media code for the discs and google for it. Then look for quality tests done on those discs. I got some DVD-R discs before, and every single last one of em is unwatchable now, they were just **** quality. DVD+R's from the same name on the box are still working fine.

If your are "backing up" x-box and playstation games the best brand is Ritek. They are also sometimes rebranded as Arita. The DVD-R flavour is the only one to go for imho as it will play on the most players (even the €50 piece of crap from argos)

For the ps2 using these disks could nearlly be considered critical. I've ordered 100's from these guys and they have been a excellent supplier http://www.digitalpromo.co.uk/erol.html (no I dont work for them :)

The octron dvd-r's in lidl use the Ritek G04 dye which is the best and they're only 7.25 for a 10 pack.

I heard/read somewhere that some blank media isn't compatible or works bad with some burners, anyone able to verify this for me?

-R media wont work on +R only burners and vice versa. Some dvd players (i.e. the ones in your living room) will only play one media type or the other. I have a +R only burner an NEC1100A and my dvd player (living room) plays both media types (it's a pioneer player)

As for quality.....generally you pay for what you get, but I've gotten lots of cheap bulkpaq discs from svp.co.uk and they've always been fine (though I generally burn at 2.4x and my burner and discs are able for 4x. In the past the 4x ones have been a little jittery).

Oh, the PS2 wont read the discs that I have for some reason. Is sony part of the -R gang?

On the contrary, Sony is part of the +R gang.

The company's left hand often dosent know what its right its doing!

Ps2 will only read dvd-r Ritek dye dvd's. I burned a lot of coasters and trawled a lot of newsgroups to have it confirmed :/

So all you need to know in general for burning dvd's. Is that dvd-r is the most compatible standard and ritek dye blanks are the only ones worth using

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Heh, I use DVD-R only really, and Ritek disks mainly.
I haven't had a single problem with a DVD I've burnt (that I know of).
All work on my Xbox, various PCs and DVD players.

hey donal , use the best media that you can , i would give Verbatim (8x) DVD-R (50) for about 47 euros from http://www.mediawrite.ie/DVD-R.htm and their post is only about 6 euros , never had a coaster with this media

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭DonalN

    Thanx in advance. :)

Cheers fitz, I forgot about the possibility of very high P + P costs. I guess I may have to think about somewhere else to get the cases.

I don't suppose you or anyone else would know somewhere in Ireland that does similar great bulk pack deals.

    Thanx again.

    I've bought maybe 400+ DVD's from http://svp.co.uk/
All {DV 3130} Bulkpaq Fujicode (8x) DVD-R Discs in Spindle Tubs of 25 for only €7.17 for each spindle, thats only 28c each

Not one coaster and they work fine with my modded x-box :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Tony H

i get my cases from mediawrite 23 e for 100 , i collect them myself as i live in cork
their p and p is about 6 euros and they use an post to delivery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭norbert64

Those mediawrite dudes R pretty good, but @ 6 euro for P+P, maybe might be a problem. Any chance you know of somewhere in Dublin. Maplin are good but the best they do is 10 Double DVD cases for 8 euro. Good but nothing compared to mediawrite 25 pack for 5.

    thanx again. :)

great discs..i did have the 4x ones but..the 8x ones was like..£1 more expensive for 25 if that ..well worth it imo ;)

norbert64: Sure are ordered literally 100's from them with no complaint. On a side note I have 10 ps2 slide keys (but no boot disks) anyone interested in buying them they are sitting here collecting dust.

evilhomer: That sounds right I have to admit when I was making packs for people I had to check their serial number at the back to ensure compatability.

Seems to me single layer DVDs dropped in price relatively quickly. Dual layer wtf? Don't seem to me any cheaper than 6 months ago?
    http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/Double_Layer_DVDR.html

Anyone know when these are likely to get cheap? Replace single layer? No crystal balls please; just manufacturing industry knowledge if it is out there.
(Just remember this has to have been in a press release - if you don't wan't your ass fired though!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 840 ✭✭✭micks

dvd-r is really only cheaper no other difference

with the PS2 the laser is very picky you have to burn games at min speed and on "good quality " discs my preference is verbatim
pc,xbox and films dont really matter which type in my experience
just wondering why did you ask in the first place
were you deciding on a burner or have you a dual burner

the discs i hear a lot of people raving about i sthe new datawrite dvd-r titanium

    cheers

The main difference between +R and -R is only in standalone recorders. IF you own a standalone recorder, +R is a better format, but for PC burners, theres no difference except quality. And quality changes between disc manufacturers rather than +R/-R type.

As mick said, theres no difference except price, this is mostly true. Both +R and -R have about 90% ish compatibility, with +R possibly gaining the advantage due to Bitsetting, making +R discs more compatible with older models of DVD=Rom drives and standalone recorders.

I estimate they will get cheap once they cost less than 2eur each, for good quality ones.

I don't think anyone could do a half-decent crystal ball estimate even if they wanted to. At the moment the yields are incredibly poor due to manufacturing problems. They're throwing away from half to three-quarters of the discs they make. That's a lot of dead cost to have to getback through higher whilesale prices. At least we've gone from "dual layer writables? Impossible" to "dual layer writables? Possible, practical but a bitch to make to any reliable standard". Could be a while then, could be the end of the year but that's the main reason why.

If you are implying that I'm too lazy to surf the net for this... It could have been posted a week ago in Japanese (by an previously unheard of company) and I'd be none the wiser ffs!

I don't even own a dual layer burner yet! - think the answer benefits others too - Thanks sceptre!
