Making VCDs from other video file types...

I'm looking for a simple way to convert mpeg, avi and other format files to a format readable by a VCD2.0 complaint DVD player. I've googled a few times but google seems to throw up nothing but price comparisons lately...
Prefer if it were free but not that bothered.
Quality is not that important as the videos are low res anyways.
    Any tips/links/help much appreciated

Nero will do it, although you'll be sacrificing speed for simplicity.

Just select "Video CD" as your project, add the AVI or whatever and it should begin conversion.

Look at www.kvcd.net if you're feeling more adventerous, up to 360mins of low res video on one CDR, playable in a DVD player. You'll need to use various encoding apps though, look for guides on the website.

Nero's built-in MPEG encoder is quite crappy, though. I suggest QuEnc (free) or TMPGEnc (MPEG-1 is free, 30-day trial for MPEG-2) for your MPEG encoding. Nero's OK for authoring/burning though, but it hates non-standard stuff (i.e. everything I make), so you may want to try VCDEasy or VCDImagerGUI for authoring the screwy stuff.
