By fining Athletico Madrid a mere €600 (that's not a typo) for the racist abuse their 'fans' inflicted on Roberto Carlos at the weekend, I can't see how their doing anything else.

The abuse was so bad that the Athletico manager asked for the PA adressor to plead with crowd to stop and yet they get fined an insulting ammount.

That fine would be light if just one person recieved it in england. Dont fans caught guilty of racism get banned from all grounds for life and fined in england?

To fine a club that miniscule amount says "well we dont really care". And we thought the FAI were bad at times??? A joke! Absolute joke!

    From the BBC website
The Spanish FA released a statement regarding the punishment.

"We wish to repeat our condemnation of this kind of behaviour and repeat our promise to act with maximum firmness to eradicate any display of racism or xenophobia in Spanish football," it read.

The fine is exactly the same amount Albacete were fined before Christmas when Barcelona striker Samuel Eto's was racially abused in Atletico's Carlos Belmonte stadium.

Burrull was again the referee for that contest, but on that occasion Albacete refused his request to make an announcement on their PA.

Their fine was reduced to 300 euros (£210) on appeal, but the fans who did thechanting were singled out by other supporters and fined 6,000 euros (£4,100) each, as well as receiving a five-month ban from other sporting events.

Gotta love this bit ""We wish to repeat our condemnation of this kind of behaviour and repeat our promise to act with maximum firmness to eradicate any display of racism or xenophobia in Spanish football," it read. "

They really need to be investigated by UEFA or FIFA about this.

I mean there is our aul pal Sepp trying to get the African game more recognised on one hand, and on the other hand not coming out in defence of players of African Origin.

It is a disgraceful hypocritical situation.

What is needed is huge fines and/or bannings from competitions for the clubs, then perhaps they will do something to get rid of these ignorami from the terraces and stands.

National sides whose followers subject opposing players to this sort of ludicrous abuse should be treated in the same way.

It is time the National Associations and the bodies they are associated with took a real and definite stance against this scourge on our game.

One mitigating factor might be that they didn't dish it out to Ronaldo, only Roberto Carlos. Racism is racism, butit was targeted, and not blanket. It was targeted at Roberto Carlos, because he is known to be more affected by it that some other black footballers.

If the Atlético PA system pleaded for it to stop, and the club publicly condemn it, what more can the club do? It is (an unpleasant) part of Spanish society at large, and it's not commonplace in Spain for people to shop others for doing it, mainly because it's the majority that are engaging in it.

The club could get stewards to eject the noise makers and then ban them. The clubs arent taking this sort of stance though are they? Sanctions should be placed on clubs until they demonstrate that they are really trying to halt the problem, not just making announcements.

They could also have UEFA/FIFA officials at games. If they hear it then they stop the game. Im sure the fans would get the message after a while, and this would eventually filter down to grass roots level.
