I've heard this is a common problem, but i noticed today that the cdrw/dvd drive isn't showing up on my laptop. The drive seems to be working ok (opening and closing etc, as well as reading discs I put into it) but the machine doesnt seem to recognise it at all. It's not on my device manager and plug and play wont detect it... so how do I fix it?

If you need all the details of the machine that's grand, but I'm hoping there's a straightforward fix

    thanks,
    flogen

Try going to Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Go to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

Primary/Secondary IDE Channel properties - Advance settings - and set device 0 and/or 1 to auto detection and Transfer mode to DMA if available.

    Good luck,

both were already at those settings... so it's not making any difference.
