I was wondering what the RS232 connection could be used for.

If you don't want to control it by IR you can control it by RS232 Protocols.

They use it over in the UK, I believe, for the sky active keyboards, and sky gamestar gamepads.

The only alternative to IR remote is IR protocol via RF in on the RF2 out connector.

The Keyboard is IR, not RS232

    It is used in factory.

It was rumoured to be used for the gamepads, but I later heard that the Gamepads were not RS232, so either the Gamepads use it or nothing does.

There is a PCMCIA / PC CARD / CI type slot too, but no SW exists for it either. It would allow a addon separate CAM if the EU "ruled" that the sky card only slot was monopolistic, or if videoguard was so compromised that Sky/NDS needed a new HW cam not possible by SW download etc.
