hey, doing the same as u. heading up in may. was in the accomodation section in maynooth asking about the price of rent for a double room in maynooth. the first guy came back and quoted me 380 a month. my jaw dropped, the second said it could be closer to 220. hmmmmm big difference!!!!!

    hahaha

sorry, but the accomodation here is so expensive, its not funny. it's my fifth year here and i've only just found a gaff that doesnt break the bank.

the first guy was right. i would expect to pay up and around 350 for a single room in a house, not to mind a double.

the only way you manage to get a double room for 220 is if a bunch of ye rent a house, around 1,100 euro with five rooms in it, each paying the same and some lucky enough to get a double room...

Does the price of rent drop in the summer months considering the students leave? Where are the more expensive areas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭catho_monster

not that i;ve found really. landlords aren't willing to rent out their student places, because they'll want to get students back in at term time cause they get some tax benefit from housing students (maybe not tax, but some money thing or the like).

most expensive areas are the further you get out from the main street, castledawson, any apartments, or the new houses in sallins wood.

most studenty places are over the old bridge by the college, beaufield, cluain aoibheann, college green.
best places, and most reasonably priced are parklands and silken vale, just past the glenroyal, beside the train stations and bus stops on either side of the road. further out that sallins road get studenty again. basically if you can get parklands or silken vale your sorted, but as with every house in maynooth, you need to have a good look around as there are some dives in all areas...

but this is just my personal experience of looking, and what i was looking for.

your best bet is parklands, silken vale, kingsbry railpark, carton court for the bus route. i would also suggest checking out the college for accomadtion lists cause there's plenty of places available for 1-3 people. I reckon you should get an seperate house from your mates (or just another mate) .i.e. move in with some students until the end of term. you would pay 70-80 a week but at the end of term look for another house, some of my mates got a house for 40 a week in cluain abhainn for the summer

I have been renting in Maynooth for the last 4 years and my best advice is get a group and get a one year lease on a house. Go to www.daft.ie as houses for rent are posted nearly every few hours. U are only 2 to 5 minutes walk from most bus stops in Maynooth no matter where you live but stay away form Old Greenfield.

You won't find anywhere better than Daft.ie

let.ie is a good site, not better than daft.ie in terms of number of ads, but i found the best 3 bed place to rent in Maynooth on it while the 6 places i found on daft.ie that i went to take a look at weren't all that great as they were made out to be on the site.

    you were agreeing here: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=242920
that there was nothing to do in Maynooth, and yet you would recommend Leixlip over it?
    Good man....

    I'd recommend Ballymun over Leixlip!!

Sorry to resurrect an oldie but I'm indulging the idea of finding a job in Maynooth or Dublin this summer. It would be nice to fend for myself and get an experience of living in the real world, regular college only goes so far in this regard. Plus most of my friends live near Maynooth.

Anyway, does anyone know how much I could expect to pay for a single or double room in a house share?? I know the average is around €70 during the college year but I'd prefer to pay no more than say €50 or €60..

Have students here done this before? Did you get a job in Maynooth (pretty slim chance now I'd say) or did you have to settle for commuting into Dublin??

    Any info appreciated, Cheers;)

Kill the zombie, but to answer your question... Best bet is to try and get a plce with your mates so you'll know what to expect to some degree. Are any of them moving out at the start of the summer? Rent wise, expect to pay the same for a room all year round, very few landlord drop rent over the summer. I pay 350 for a single ensuite room, so look around and start looking early.

Jobs in maynooth are a scarcity so you'll be looking to Dublin/Liffey Valley, make sure you factor travel into your monthly budget. At a guess you'll need to be earning about 450/500 quid a week to have any fun if your rent is E200(sharing) Bills E50 Travel E50 and food E25.*

*these figures may very depending on job situation, they may, in no way reflect the actual situation you find yourself in. lordgoat will not be held responsible for K4t having a crap summer.

I reckon the chances of getting a job in Maynooth are really slim.. Liffey Valley or the city are your best bets.. If you get a job in Maynooth and I don't after living here all my life and trying since school - I'll not be a happy bunny ;):p

Maybe I need to move...

Where are you getting a weekly figure of 200 from?! If rent is approx 60 and you add in the other expenses you mentioned, total expenditure per week should be at most €250.

Hmm all I can do is try. I have two free weeks at the end of january which I intend to use for job searching!

Apologies i meant 200 a month not per week, and i also meant earning about 250/300 a week!

Figures all over the place on that last post.

Best of luck with it, sorry if i was overly negative!

My one warning k4t would be that Jan is a bad time for job searching. Most people would have hired extra staff for the Christmas period and kept any on if they were need of people!

Although I am going to be searching too seeing as my christmas job didn't get me kept on! :(

Good luck and let me know if you hear of anything! :)

Talk to Bradys letting agency on main st. If you're going to be working in Intel they have some really nice places that are in a lot better nick than a lot of the student houses around here. You'll save money in the long run with a house with decent insulation.

Carton Sq. is the nicest place i lived in maynooth. Some of the apartments in lyreen manor above dunnes are also good but shop around theres a serious difference in the rent prices from apartment to apartment up there
