I just got a new harddrive and casing to make it external. Now what do I do? Do I have to format it or partition it? It would be great if it came with some instructions.

What OS do you have? Just slot the drive in (should be intuitive I imagine), and connect up the USB/Firewire cable, and power up the case. If your using XP it should detect the drive and you will see it in My Computer. You can then format the drive under Windows.

I have XP and it's connected by USB. When I plug it in windows detects the hdd and it shows up in device manager but not in My Computer.

Oh it's ok. I'm using the Disk Management utility to create a primary partition and format it.
