Last years was pretty good. Didn't go myself, but they broadcast it on MTV Germany/Switzerland when I was in Zurich, it looked savage.

Was at Rock Am Ring in 2000, we drove there...
Excellent festival, would recommend getting there a day or two in advance - the camping area stretches for miles around the place because it's all hillside. Think we had about a 30 or 40 minute walk to get from tent to venue! I think that was largely due to us getting there when it had already started and needing to find room for the car and 2 tents.
It's kind of a rural area so there isn't any close train links afaik but if you investigate you should find buses to get you there.
Rock-Im-Park is in a different part of Germany (Nuernburg in Bayern as opposed to Nuerenburg I think ;)) and will have the same lineup but would possibly be less hassle to get to - plus there's swimming / boats beside the lake afaik. Also probably fewer bikers at Rock-Im-Park but they're mostly harmless. Just repeat a mantra of "Ich werde deine Kinder essen" when they're near and you'll be safe.

So for Rock am Ring my suggestion would be fly to somewhere like frankfurt and try figure out buses or better, a lift. For Rock im Park fly to Frankfurt or Munich and the train system will sort you our, may even be a Nuernburg airport :)

Must check out the line-up :D
