over the past few days at work [on the net], i've run into the AOH, who are very strong in the US. in drogheda a few years back they had rooms in shop street, now its a snooker club.
i've heard its the catholic equivalent of the orange order. anyone have any views etc?

they run (or are a big part of) the paddy's day parades over in the states..

I think they run the soup kitchen for homeless people in town on christmas day too (not 100% sure on that one tho)

I have always believed that they were more like the masons than the orange order, who are just biggots

Well i've only seen the US pages, and they seem to be a republican kinda group- a lot of their sites have the quote "Ireland unfree shall never be at peace" [pearse?], while one has the email addresses of various figures they hate under the heading "Know your enemy".
some of the sites also have pictures of gerry adams, others are really cheesy, with links to shops selling irish linen etc. they have the really annoying irish folk music americans seem to love.
they believe in an ireland that has never existed, nor will.

the aoh in america homegage is www.aoh.com.

Personally I hate people who try to tell me how to be Irish and what Irish is all about.

Excuse me but I am Irish and most of the people here are nothing like what these people think are "Irish". They don't have a clue!

Right heres one for you a cousin (through marriage) was head of the AOH for a couple of years. Dont know if I should be proud or not of that. But in reply to puck the "Irish" community in the states like these kinda things (mainly ppl who's great great grand daddy was from the west of iiiireland). My cousin was from Ireland he was born in Ireland and emigrated when he was young so he did have a clue things have changed in Ireland so fast in the past few years their a bit out of touch smile.gif

several of their districts have "political education officers"- remember the cultural revolution in china?
    sounds a bit sinister, eh?

    Hey Puck
Get even! When they tell you how to "be irish" tell them how to be american/whatever they are.
Tell the American "Well, what you have to do to be American, what it's all about...
Don't care about anything but yourself, make sure that you have the proper reverential attitude towards material items and men with lots of money, especially old and ugly ones.
Eat lots of food and get really, really fat.
Wear ugly clothes with too many colors.
Come to Ireland, and run around with your fat tail jiggling in Bermuda shorts and yell "HEY YA'LL DO A JIG OR SUMPIN!"
Always, ALWAYS, to be a proper american, ask where Darby O'Gill lived. Amid loud guffaws and elbow nudging, claim that redheads are JUST SO HOT!"
Adopt a fake swagger and meander into a pub, affect a drawl/brogue so thick it would take the varnish off the woodwork, and ask for a "wee pint of gunna$$."

Very simple, ya see...just toss it right back at them smile.gif

Nope, Luc, I meant THEM....THEM being the ones who tell puck "how to be irish" and I am not going to include myself in a group of people I am not a part of smile.gif

US would be US AMERICANS...yeap, I'm American..but not ALL americans are running around telling everybody how to live, and neither am I smile.gif

So why would I include myself?!?

    Duh!

    How doing, Luc, LTNS smile.gif
