I'm not sure how things work in the IE, but here they are a pain in the ass about the passport thing... I needed one in a pinch to go to Cancun 2 years ago, and it cost me 175USD to get it all done right then and there.... state department sucks!!! good luck though... bring plenty of sweatshirts... gonna be cold here in NY that time in January...

Go to your local Garda station and get the forms and fill them out. They need to be witnessed by a Garda officer. Then go into the passport office forst thing on monday and be nice, they have no obligation to complete the process in the time frame you have left. Even the passport express service requires 10 working days.

I understand 10 days is the fastest they'll do it, except in cases of emergency. Booking a trip when you know you have no passport doesn't count as an emergency.

Incidentally, US immigration won't allow you in if you don't have at least six months left on a passport, and Ryanair won't even let you on a plane to the UK

A friend of mine was in a similar situation just before Christmas.
Get the forms, make sure they are completed correctly and you have any documentation you need. Get a copy of your airline ticket.

Take all this to the 'Urgent' counter in Molesworth Street. They will charge you an extra 50 euro for the pleasure, but they will 'rush' it through - this could mean a two-day wait.

    OR

pay an 'Emergency' fee of 100 euro and they will do it more or less on the spot.

The staff are very pleasant over there - the security guys open the doors at about 8.45 I think, but the office does not officially open until 9.30. You take a number and queue, pay, and they may tell you to come back on Tuesday to collect it.

When you go to collect it, you have to do the 'take a number and wait' thing all over again (this time upstairs). When we were there collecting my friend's one, we didn't get out until after 6pm. I think they may be less rushed in the post-Christmas period, so hopefully you'll get it sorted quickly.

Enjoy New York - I just got back today. Lots of electronic and electrical bargains to be had at B&H, W34th between 8th and 9th. Rather chilly temps at the moment though.

Good advice BUT you probably won't have to pay anything extra because you're not totally pushed for time. I had to apply for an uncle of mine recently and go in to collect for him, dropped in the forms on the Tuesday and collected on the Friday. Be very nice when you go in, grovel and apologise for being a tit. They may want you to collect the passport in the afternoon of the last working day before you travel though, so if you aren't free then you might have to pay the extra fee for an expedited service.

a friend of mine got some sort of temporary passport thingy when his passport ran out and he had to travel the same day. Not sure they do that anymore.
