my friend has a prob with his new xfx 6800. when he installs the nvidia drivers and he chooses to reboot his system. when the computer restarts the display fails to get past the windows logo screen and his computer reboots after a min. then he has the option to either boot to safe mode or use previously last known settings and it works. then it reverts to default vga drivers.
    any help?

I'd say go to the chipset manafacturer's site and d/l the latest driver from there. One on the disc that came with the card may be outdated or corrupt.

we used 3 of the latest set of drivers.
he has only a 300 watt generic psu, although when the card is installed the psu's fan runs at the same speed as before and also the heat that comes out is minimal

You cud go to control panel add standard svga driver ,then remove all nvidia drivers, power off , load up windows see do u have svga display, reset, then detect hardware or let windows automatic detect nvidia 6800 whatever ,then let it load windows nvidia drivers old ones from windows cab or windows cdrom, ie see can u get old drivers working ok, u may need to go to bios 1st
disable onboard mobo video ooutput,1ST go to bios check enable agp or pci ,whatever card u have most likely agp card.disable onbordvideo if u r using agp card or pci.

psu could be too weak for the job, what else is that 300W powering?

    just powereing a 160gb harddisk, 256mb ram and p4 2.4 400fsb
edit: he is just going to send it back for testing, once that is done we will do more testing.

The 6800's take quite a bit of power and a good 350w would be minimum and a good 480w would be optimal

    A new psu maybe?

I'd say the PSU is the problem as well. Have you access to a better PSU to see if it works that way?

Buy a Fortran, Antec or Enermax PSU.
