Do I need an upgrade ?

I have recently accquired HL2, Doom3 and FarCry. Now I understand to play these the way they were intended I will need a bit of an upgrade. I haven't played games in a long long time for various reasons and the last time that I did my XP2100, GF4Ti4400 and 512MB PC2700 were the business.

I have ordered an XFX 6600GT (AGP) from overclockers and it has occured to me that MAYBE my CPU might be a bottleneck, extra ram would be nice of course but I can hold off on that.

Apparently the best CPU my board (MSI KT4 Ultra...yes I know would love to upgrade but need to keep costs down...) is a Barton 3000+ 333fsb. Where in hell am I going to get one of those! Overclockers list them but are out of stock.

Dya reckon the upgrade from the 2100 palamino to the 3000 Barton would make a huge difference in games ? Or will the card be enough ?

Ive got a similar system to you (2200, 512, 6800) and HL2, doom3 and far cry run great

Also, by acquired you mean pirated.... yes :)

Install yer card first and if its not satisfactory, get the upgrade

Definitely in need of a little upgrading alright, have you considered getting an XP mobile 2500+ or 2800+ and overclocking if you need a cheap upgrade?

I'd say auction sites are your best bet for the cpu unless you want to go for the mobile chip and overclock some? That's what I'd go for

Depends what sort of framerate you want and what res your happy with. I'd say your machine would be fine, at medium res and I'd wait to upgrade until you can get a much faster AMD64. Those 2500m are not cheap and it would depend on the motherboard, ram and hsf if you could get a decent overclock. Putting money into socket A is dead money TBH.

I played the demo on a GF4-4600, 2400XP, 512mb ram and it ran fine. Was at 1280x1024 at medium settings. No AA or AF. I would be happy to play it at that myself.

Mind you the GF4 card are only Dx8 and whereas the 6600 is DX9. So you'll need more ummph to run the 6600 than you would if you were just using the GF4 you have. Since DX9 needs more horsepower.

Card arrived today (only ordered it tuesday from overclockers), so will try it out and see.

Peteee, I have 'accquired' a few games in my time, but in this instance accquired does not mean pirated by the way ! Christmas pressies and all that !

Looking forward to trying them out later anyway, used to play a lot have a few thousand PC games, used to be a collector, still collected this year even though I wasn't playing, big backlog to clear now!

If CPU is a prob, think I will wait for overclockers to get them back in, cheers lads.
