saw it in the times today, just downloaded my first purchase, the prodigy, always outnumbered never out gunned.
9.99 seems reasonable for a recent album & I believe I can burn up to 7 copies. (haven't tried that yet...)

    ill stick with allofmp3.com
perfectly legal and costs about 50c per album

It might be borderline legal (because of Russian copyright laws), but no money goes to the artists or the record companys. IMO it's better to download illegally instead of giving money to this company

money does go to the artists.

Just burned the CD (not sure if I've figured out the play list thing properly, but worked as I've only purchased one album and there's a "purchased music" playlist).

Listening to the CD on my "regular" stereo now, sounds excellent to me, though my brain knows it's not quite as good quality as an original CD would be (compression). Looks like there's also an option to burn in mp3 format.

It seems you can only burn CDs from playlists, not from albums. Does anyone know for sure if this is the case and if so, is there an easy way of creating playlists from an album track listing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭L5

    http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/download/

Songs, afaik, are in aac format, protected by FairPlay which only works on iPod players, or iTunes inbuild player.

Small royalty payments may go to record companies/artists, I don't know. but in reality it would be tiny amounts. Various record companies have spoke out against this and other Russian sites selling music to customers outside of the countries borders.

I see. But if you can burn them to cd then what's to stop you ripping them as mp3s.

€9.99 to me is far too much for an album that can only be downloaded in a compressed format, no packaging and relatively miniscule production/logistics costs for record companies. i won't be handing my money over any time soon

Playlists are very easy to create. Theres a 'new playlist' option under file. It appears in the column on the left. THen go into your library and drag the names of the songs you want over the name of the playlist. Takes less than a minute to do an album

How much of the 9.99 on iTunes goes to the artists? How much of a standard CD cover price goes to artists? I think it's very little. Most of it goes to the record producers. And modern technology is making them increasingly unneeded...

    Likewise.

yeah a tenner for an album, or rather compressed songs is ridiculous. i'd rather pay €2 (or even less sometimes) more and get the cd with packaging and all at cdwow.

I'd only really value iTunes shopping if they had a brilliant back catalogue. I can't get past the firewall here to look but I read that the US one is quite impressive...

But are they all mainstream regardless of the date and does the catalogue vary for each country?

I'd be looking for dance/electronica mostly...

Click the "browse" button in your Library (top right) and scroll down to the album you want. Drag the album title over to the left under your playlists. That album is now a playlist that you can burn and delete when you're done (it'll only delete the playlist, not the actual album).

Cheers Robert, knew there had to be a simple way of doing it.

Back catalog doesn't appear to be great, did a search for Van Morrison, didn't come up with much, and worse, got slightly different results when I switched to the US store.

On the value for money front, I don't think people will come to an agreement on that one. At the risk of being contraversial, I would say people who tend to buy CDs in shops or from "established" online sources, will feel it is value for money. Others, whose music collection has been "exchanged" from other sources will still find an excuse not to pay.

I would say it's definitely not value from money when compared to buying CD's. Unlike a CD, there's a distict possibility that you will now longer be able to play the DRM'ed music you bought from apple 10 years from now and will have to pay for another copy. The whole idea of DRM is to prevent music from being played on other computers. That's not a problem in the short term if your not into file-sharing. Long term however, it will be a problem.

Not to mention that CDs are a higher quality. Nearly everyone can't tell the difference (including me), but still...
