This Company will replace the screen for you if you post the unit to them, as it's in the States this may not be feasible but if you email them they may be persuaded to send you an LCD and you could repair it yourself. I've dealt with this company and they seem ok - replied to my emails very quickly and I had my parts within 3 days (UPS shipping)

May be worth a try ?!

Thanks for that unfortunately they only supply the screens for the 3rd gen Ipods.
However found another crowd http://ipodmods.com/mods/index_load.htm who have them have mailed them to see if they will ship them to me to install myself, or else i can post it to the uk...

mad money..... 185euro to repair a 1st or 2nd gen ipod? whats the point a new one is 320 with a years warranty. u would have been better selling its hard disk on ebay and u would have got 100 euro for it.

only he can say but i doubt it, as from the web link someone else gave, that company does 3rd and 4th gen lcd repairs and he said they were no good as they didnt repair his type so i can only persume he has a 1st or 2nd gen one.

i believe apple give an 8% student discount on ipods, so one can be had for 290 with shipping from apple.ie, after u email a copy of ur student card.

to put his repair cost in context i bought a sony hd1 20GB music player for 205 euro brand new with a 3 year accidental warranty.
