Changing digital speedometer from miles to km

anyone else have this problem. I drive a 04 Scenic and the speedometer is digital so when the metric change comes in on Jan 20th I'm going to have to be pretty quick on the old metal arithmetic or risk penaltie points.

I rang renault today and guess what, surprise, surprise the speedometer can be changed, but there is a charge - €79. Does this sound like a rip off to anyone else? Does anyone know if it can be done without having to go to their service centre. I really want to avoid handing over another €79, I'm already €280 down for a replacent key after my DS dropped the other in the shannon.

    79 sounds good to me

Probably means someone has to connect the workshop diagnostic computer up to the car and press a few buttons. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, so €79 sounds a bit steep to me.

    Hi

Just wondering I have a '99 Ford Fiesta and a '00 Ford Focus (Ghia) both with analog speedometers and the MPH being the dominant.

Can I get the new speedometer with KPH dominant ?

Have you checked through your owners manual to see if there's any instructions there? It would be unusual on a digital speedo for it not to be possible to change between miles and km through the settings on the on board computer.

Its pretty much a brand-new Scenic, there is no way you should be paying that sort of price for a standard change like that. If you bought it new go to the garage and complain like mad, or just try another renault dealers.

Just looked at the manual - yeah you can change the screen to read km, but it defaults to mph every time the engine switches off - so that isn't going to work.

The service guy I spoke to confirmed that no new parts were necessary and it would take about 5 minutes so that why I'm gripping about €79.

Then there's probably some way of making the settings default, it may be through the same menu or possibly by doing it with the key at a certain position. Have you tried searching for a renault forum? The info will be out there, it's just a case of finding it.

I've got a renault dealer manual at home. Will check it and see if there's anything in it about changing the units of the speedo. Will post back later.

However I'd say if Renault are charging 79 euros it probably is a case of plugging the car into a special computer i.e. not a DIY job.

Ok I just checked the renault dialogys manual - as suspected it appears that you need to plug a diagnostic tool into the dash to change the units on the speedo.

I'd say your best bet is to try shopping around and see if you can find a renault dealer who will do it for less than the amount you were quoted.

Sorted, now I can go on trips from UK to France

Tried to follow manual and got there eventually.
    Enter Scenic.
    Insert card
Press and hold Start/Stop without pressing Clutch or Brake pedal press and hold switch on end of RH stalk and WAIT.
Speedo flashes, mph then kph, still hold until all flashing stops.
    You are now in metric.

Does not reset to mph when ignition is switched off, Manual says it does if battery disconnected though

Hope this helps and saves 70€

Have a 04 scenic and the speedometer has changed from kms to mphs all on its own. Checked the manual and followed the instructions on changing back to kms and it changes back, but after driving for about 1 km it switches back to mphs anyone ever experienced the same problem.

to be fair, he's only asking a related question rather than starting a new thread.
