And are you referring to all the boards here of just Humanities?

Why don't you publish a list of everyone you think is stupid?

i didnt say anyone was stupid.
i asked whether people thought the level of posts had degraded recently.
has nothing to do with humanities. and no im not talking about such boards as trolls, or cs or whatever.
and crash, as for that i was just wondering if anyone could spot a little bit of irony.
i mean there are people that only go about posting lol or roflol or plyd or other stupid things. its just more obvious in humour.
i havent actual said anything about anyone, im mearly asking about the level of posts.
and a good point is this thread, already people go of at me.
sure, i could have posted a differently worded post that would make you think, but im not an english expert, and i'll never be a writer. but the fact remains that people start directing their comments at me as opposed to answering the question...?

The man's got a point. People are focusing on little details like the examples, and ignoring the question.

I had a different nick, a while ago before somwthing caused my password to get all ballsed up, so I've been around here longer than it seems. Still, not long enough to really see a downfall. What I do see is that some people are posting well thought-out, witty and sensible messages, and I notice that very often they have a freat many stars under their name. Newer people seem to be more to blame for the flame wars and the uninteresting topics.

I think that people need to take more time over what they say, and think about it. After all, you don't have to reply immediately, it's not a chatroom.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 111 ✭✭Oh yeah

Case in point - I said freat..

I don't think it's necessarily right to say that the overall standard has gone down. Certainly more people are contributing to all the boards but the same people (which I suppose WhiteWashMan is referring to) are also still here.

When any population increases, you get more 'muppets' or whatever. Just think of the amount of chat channels that were cool until too many people started joining.

Yer right, ppl should think before they speak and stuff but that's not the way it works frown.gif.

Id like to put the drop in intelligent posts down to my freak absence for the last month or two biggrin.gif , but As WWMan actually stated in the first post alot of it is migration from the CS board which has gone to the dogs of late , and of course most posts dont deal with the brass tacks of politics anymore , not a bad thing by any means but it is a little less emotive than some of the posts earlier this year , and alot of Posters have gone quiet aswell , meh archnemisis Clintons cat has dissapeared and there hasnt been much from either . But complaining about it isnt going to do much , and we cant get selective on whos allowed to post or anything like that , I mean having a Hypermoderated Totalitarian boards on Political and social debate is a bit counterproductive to put it mildly

    Shrewgar!

i have to say that the level of 'intelligent' posting on these boards seems to have really dropped over the last 6 months.
i dont put it done to any perticular individuals or groups, but there doesnt seem to be either the wit, humour, or basic posting skills about.
i mean look at the humour board. sure, people put up jokes, and some of them are funny. some of them are crap, and some of them amke me hoot with laughter. and yet people actually reply with 'lol'.
    whats that about?
is like, did you really 'lol' or are you just saying that?
ive never actually seem anyone 'roll on the floor laughing out loud' or rotflol if you cant understand english and need a good dose of net speak.
whenever anyone gets into a debate it turns into a flame war and everyone gets up in arms.
there is no point to this post, im just curious as to what people think.
personally i think the level of posting has been diluted with something unsavory since this has become a popular place.
mind you, i t could be something to do with the CS boards. now theres a den of muppetry if ever i saw one

    Yeah, i know.

You don't have to start a topic about the lack of good posts to get my attention.

I find the topics are more boring lately. I dunno what it is, yes there is more of them, but I find myself completely disinterested in about 2/3 of all new topics.

I started reading these boards back in September. I know I'm not here as long as others but they were completely different to what we have now.

The level of intelligence in the posts back then was a lot higher than it is now. I have come across threads where I really feel the person who started them is looking to get 100 spammy replies but not achieve any level of interesting debate.

I reply to posts when I think I have something worthwhile to add to it. I rarely reply with LOL or ROFL in hope of getting my post number higher. I honestly feel that people only spam to get their number of posts higher. There are people on these boards who have twice my posts but have been registered only two or three months. I am sure that the vast majority of the contributions are LOL or some other irrelevant sentence. People seem happy to strive for the lowest common denominator every time.

I would like to think that I don’t spam and my topics and post are valid and are reasonably interesting. I’m sure someone will be more than willing to copy and paste in several occasions when I have spammed, fine go ahead.

I really hope a few individuals really cop on to themselves because I am fed up with the state of things.

The fall of boards.ie is directly proportional to the rise in popularity of CS as far as I am concerned. More 12 clicking all round I say.

I don't come to this board very often now as it seems the topics and opinions recycle themselves quite regularly. I do post 'lol' myself if I think a joke is good, and sometimes a do laugh out loud, sometimes. Pepperkin doesn't post here anymore, which is a shame. We had a blazing row once which the Mods and DeV had to calm down. Not a good thing but it did teach me a lesson and now I don't really flame anybody. Unless they REALLY annoy me. Perhaps we mods should step in more and tell people to calm down, and point in the right direction (opinions?)

I do agree with WWMan; standards are down but they might pick up if we make an effort to bring them up. The No Logo thread in Literature could be the start. But more and more responses seem irrelavent as the poster hasn't read what was originally said. Or flame before they finish reading it. I'm no author myself but since joining boards the quality of what I do write has improved a lot. And when I get into a discussion in the 'real' world my approach has improved too.

One more point: 12-clicking is the last resort to abuse of the boards. It should not and does not reflect the quality of a genuine post; not matter how silly, uninformed or muppetised. See http://www.boards.ie/bulletin/Forum24/HTML/000241.html for further discussion of 12-clicking.

The Boards have had fairly large increase in users as far as I can see. A lot (ie. not all) of the newbies have very little netiquette or if they have it's on IRC or instant messaging where the style of posting is a lot different.

Personally I have a lot of Usenet experience where the situation was somewhat similar. Up till a couple of years ago the serious poster to muppet ratio was in favour of the serious poster. Then the population at large discovered usenet and it rapidly descended into spam central (alt.* anyway).

The difference is that here boards are moderated in a more controlled way.

Personally I think the creative posts are increasing but they're just a little harder to find.

I certainly don't agree that the boards is experiencing a "downfall" it's just that the times they are a changing. We were all newbies once and then we learned that people appreciated creative posting more than spammy topics.

What annoys me are those long rambling posts that are hard to read, cos even though the poster is making a valid comment the text is all lumped together without any punctuation or capital letters tongue.gif

again, the irony is too much....
becuase i really need to boost my post count dont i?
just because the lower peons are interested in getting ahigh post count, doesnt mean we all are. and no, im not one of the main culprits. i posted about 10 or 12 of thise the other day as i just got fed up of people reply to jokes with lol and nothing else.
    sad.
