Help Needed - Looking for Psychology Reading List

Ok here's the thing - I have a friend (21) who is starting first year arts (studying psychology) in NUIG in September.

Now the college themselves refuse to give out first year reading lists for psychology (either this coming year's list or last year's list) so I'm wondering is there anyone on here who either did 1st year Psychology in NUIG this year or knows someone who did and would be able to provide me with a reading list to give to my friend.

    Cheers, thanks, etc, in advance.

Yeah I did it as one of my subjects last year, failed it too smile.gif.

The only book you really read is this: 'Psychology; The Science of Behaviour' by Carlson, Buskist and Martin. The rest of the stuff you get from the lectures, and man do you get lots...in fact you get more out of the lectures than the book.

Some advice, make sure your friend really wants to study it. If he/she is taking it just becuase they think it might be interesting and see how it progresses then they are potentially asking for trouble, it's very tough.I'm sorry I picked it now. Whole load of work.If they decide to go for it, then

    1) Go to the lectures, especially those boring double physiology ones.

2)Don't be lazy and not bother turning up for the automatic percentages you can get just for partaking in 3 rd year students experiments. You need every percent.

3)Don't be lazy and not bother turning up for your tutorial group things. They keep attendance you know, and you'll drop marks.

4)Take Soc and Pol as a subject aswell.Pass is easy to get smile.gif

    Cheers Bugler. Appreciate it.

My friend really does want to do it but she doesn't have the points to get straight into it so she has to do it through Arts. She knows it'll be a whole load of hard work - that's why she wants to start early by getting stuck into the reading list.

Just a few questions: You did do it in NUIG right? Was that the only book they told you to read or was that the only one that you actually read?

Anywho - thanks a bunch for the name of the book.

I did it in NUIG, yes.Thats the only book you will be told to get, or at least we were told.Presuming that the course material isn't changing this year then buying that book is all she can do really. The lectures and what you are told in there is what is most important.Large parts of that book you don't even touch in the duration of the course. There is not alot she can do before the course starts IMO...tell her instead to concentrate on keeping up to pace through each week, that will be plenty of work.Though of course reading ahead can't hurt too much. The only other things you will be given as reference will be case studies, kept in the library afaik, but you don't really need them, once you know the basics of the case and the procedure you don't need to read every detail.
