The winner of the inaugural Setanta Cup will receive a windfall €150,000, it was announced on Wednesday.

The new north-south competition gets underway on March 15 with 13 matches scheduled over a two-month period with the final taking place on May 21 at a yet to be decided venue.

The Football Association of Ireland, Irish Football Association and the six competing clubs; Shelbourne, Longford Town, Cork City, Linfield, Glentoran and Portadown met in Dundalk on Wednesday to discuss the dispersion of the prize fund for this year and the structure that the competition would take.

It was agreed that a draw on January 27 will split the clubs into two groups of three with every club playing their group rivals in home and away fixtures. The two top teams will then meet in the final while Setanta television will show ten of the 13 matches live.
The prize for the winner is 6 times the amount available to the winner of any other domestic competition. Not bad.

    How is that Big Ears?

All I am saying is that I think Shels will win the Setanta Cup.

Is that such a bad thing to say?

remember the difference between confidence and arogence is often not what you say , but how you say it . Shels will win the Setanta Cup=fair enough they're probably favourites despite NI sides still being in season .
More money for Shels=as if to glowth that your side is picking up a lot more money than other Irish football sides , but I just remembered your a Man United fan so none of what ive said will probably make sense to you :D .

    Arrogance you say?

Of course, Shels are the champions, and favourites for the Setanta Cup.

My comment was simply that Shels will indeed get more money if they win the Setanta Cup.

which they will , but when you state the comment by just saying more money for Shels , well it just seems arogent .

Is anyone else worried about the huge advantage of being in season the Northern teams have ?
Is it enough to help one of them win despite the main obstruction of being **** .

Not worried about the Northern teams too much, the Irish League is years behind the eL in terms of quality.

I think the final well end up being Shels -v- CVFC / or possibly Glentoran.

Theres not much between Glentoran and Linfield though , each side of similer quality .

    Typical Shels arrogance.

Shels will not win the Setanta cup, nor will they win the league, or even a match in Europe :p;)

City are up for this, Shels will be pre-occupied with their European preparation.

I suppose it all depends on who is in which group. I would peronally prefer to see city avoid both Longford and Shels. I cant see any of the IFA teams winning, as the eL is streets ahead in terms of quality in recent years.

€150k is alot of money. Its a joke when you think that it is more prestigous (money wise) for a team to win this than a league nd cup double, with a European match or 2 thrown in.

Itll be very handy for City when they win it.

But won't CVFC be preoccupied with preparing for another season of bitterness.

I all seriousness though, the European campaign won't be starting til July, so I can't it interfering with the Setanta Cup all that much. Anyway, even if you think it would, it surely would have the same impact on CVFC?

You'll deffo have Longford, and the Irish League winners. That's the way the groups are being made as far as I know.

You see, there you go again. May i ask, how are City bitter. A Shels fan calling anyone bitter is a bit of a laught, considering Olivers little outburst moments after ye had clinched th e title a few weeks ago. I have heard of bad losers, but this guy took the cake, that he couldnt even accept victory with dignity.

It is guys like him who hold the league back, make it an unattractive to barstoolers. Hell, he scares people away from supporting irelands (currrent) top club.

As for the Setanta, I really do hope its a success, but as it'll mostly be a midweek affair, i cant see it really capturing the imagination too much, certainly not until the final stages.

Is the final 2 legged? Is it the top team in each group progresses to the final, or is there a semi and final?

Why let that bother us, the rest of the EL consider us the Irish ManYoo anyway, may as well enjoy the bragging rights of being champions (again ;) ) and favourites for the Setana Cup while we can...

    My thoughts exactly.

Now, leaving the bitterness of the provincials aside, isn't this a glaring indication of the failure of the FAI and Eircom League to reward teams in the domestic league and cups?
