There was a cheap travel insurance company on pigsback.com, ace travel insurance, had excellent rates (well for European anyway! wasnt checking for US) and you got 300 piggypoints for booking insurance thru them.

This was by far the cheapest I could find....

    http://www.acetravelinsurance.ie/

For a 4 day trip to Prague it was only €19 for 2 people, some other sites were looking for €40 or more!

If you are a VHI member they do really cheap yearly holiday insurance

I heard the AA advertising travel insurance on the radio recently. Might be worth checking out

FWIW I'm of the opinion that good travel insurance is better than cheap travel insurance, although, obviously if you can find one that is both good and cheap tehn you're on to a winner.

I'd echo the recommendation for the ACE insurance (www.acetravelinsurance.ie), and if you're with the AIB, you can get it (slightly cheaper I think) via the AIB website. They do everything online too, including sending you your policy document as a PDF document, and you can preview the policy details online before you buy.

Last year before I booked my insurance, I compared
the prices going through Pigsback.com and aib.ie for ACE Insurance.
AIB WAS WAY MORE EXPENSIVE for the exact same insurance!
Obviously the Bank was taking a cut and you didn't get the piggys points either!

I have just checked and found the following.
Going direct into acetravelinsurance.ie and piggsback.com
you get the same rates for travel insurance (but with pigsback you get
300 points, not worth a lot but it's better then nowt!).
Go to the site via aib.ie and you get the following
    pigsback aib AIB MARK UP
    5 days in europe for 1 person 13 20 7
    30 days for 2 people 22 30 8
    17 days for family 36 47 11
    23 days for 1 adult and kids 29 39 10
    etc
    etc
    etc

    I didn't bother with Worldwide.
ANOTHER RIP OFF FROM THE IRISH BANKING SYSTEM!

You're right! I'm sure that last year when I looked that difference wasn't there. I wouldn't touch pigsbackcom with a bargepole, but the prices directly from ACE are the same. I've emailed the AIB to ask them to explain the difference, don't hold your breath though...

Just out of curiousity why would you not "touch them with a bargepole"?

I have no connection with pigsback.com just in case.
I've been a member for years and have received loads of
vouchers off them for doing basically nothing.

Last couple years I've gone with worldwide multitrip annual inc ski cover for meself and my girlf. had BofI first year, VHI last 2. really cheap - something like 120 for the whole thing for both of us. means when you pop away for a weekend somewhere you're still covered - eg a weekend in london or whatever. and about as cheap as 2x 1 week holidays anyway

If you own a home and have house insurance with added extras like All Risks, and have a VHI or BUPA policy it would be worth looking at their policies. Due to the principle of subrogation you cannot be doubley insured. So if you lost your bag while away, your travel insurance company will make a claim off your house policy. Also a yearly policy is obviously far better value than a short term one. In my experience a valid claim is more likely to be paid out than a short term because of abuses. They run you through the miller if you claim on short term becuase so many people do and the rates take a higher claim ratio into consideration.

Also some Credit Cards (mainly Gold) have FREE Travel insurance (not accident!) but with some of them you have to book the flights using the card.

Apart from the stupid name, I'm not sure really ... it just seems to be too good to be true, and experience over the years has taught me that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

Cool - I never realised this!

Yes a silly name but having received loads of vouchers off them over the years just for clicking a couple of banners, ad's etc, I'd have to say it is a great site. It costs nothing so where's the catch?
The advertisers pay pigsback so pigsback pay you (in points)
    to click on the banners.
I presume Pigsback get back a lot more then they give out so it suits them to give out the free points.

I checked out the VHI website and it's €49 for the whole year. Ther amounts mentioned are much larger than ace insurance which was €19 for 8 days.

You have to be a member of VHI to avail of the offer though :(
