What is the best downloader for downloading things IE would usually download that can resume if connection fails. I used to use Getright but never installed it on this laptop. What around these days?

I never had a need for those things once I got broadband. Never had a failed download.

FireFTP - its an extension for FireFox 6MB - drawback is it don't work with Http downloads.
    firezilla
    netleach

all free , all allow resume fire* are open source as well
IIRC even firefox allows pause and resume on some downloads - but fireftp is better..

Is there any plugin that allows resumable downloads in Firefox? That would be great. It's the one thing I miss about Opera.

    GetRight isn't too bad.

    http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/download.html

This is the best I've seen. Try the 30 day free trial. It is the only one I've found actually worth paying for.

Download Accelerator Plus. Its free (but ad supported) unless you register. Download here: http://www.download.com/Download-Accelerator-Plus/3000-2071_4-10332038.html?tag=lst-0-1
This program claims to make downloading up to 300 percent faster, though we registered 50 to 100 percent acceleration on our broadband connection. That's about average for download managers. Besides the common tactic of splitting files into smaller pieces, Download Accelerator Plus speeds things up by seeking faster mirrors. It also can get a file simultaneously from several sites, which is useful if a site limits the download speed. The utility resumes interrupted downloads, logs onto protected sites, offers a simple FTP client, and lets you schedule downloads. It automatically sorts files into categories based on their file extensions. The utility can dial up and redial your service provider if the connection is dropped. It can start downloads right when you click a link in your browser, even if you use Opera, or you can drag and drop a link into a download basket. The program also installs a handy toolbar into Internet Explorer
Enjoy!

Yep wget is good. wget http://file/to/get to download. or wget -c http://file/to/get to continue a downlaod. Wrks with FTP aswell. You can put all the URLs in a file and pass it the filename. You can throlle it as well, so that it doesn't go above x kb/s. A very nice tool.

And since it's open source, it's free! And the command line ain't too difficult. Once you learn it you'll never go back.

I saw your post about that :) I meant one for http downloads because I'd say 90% of the stuff I download would be http not ftp.

yeah it's annoying that it don't do HTTP - only a matter of time though..

WinHTTrack - great for pulling down web sites and it can resume where it left off last time.

NetLeech is pretty good, it accelerates downloads, resumes stopped downloads. It also has a scheduler that allows you to specify a start time for a download.

You can download a trial version that still works even after your trial has expired.
