USB2 External Storage

I bought this from komplett and received it today.
The problem is, I've tried to use it on two computers with absolutely no result. The computers don't even recognize the device as being present.

I have tried both hard drives and a dvd writer with it to no avail.
One of the "customer comments" states that "theres a little jumper you have to plug in the the usb/ide circuit. It only works with this in, and its not mentioned in the manual anywhere", but doesn't go into further detail and there are no unplugged jumper pins on the caddy.

I'm at my wits end here and any help would be appreciated.

    What item is it? Link?

Have you set the jumper on the HD to Primary? If you have it on slave or cable select, it won't work.

I have an external caddy that doesn't show up automatically when I plug it in. I have to go into "Computer Management" in Control Panel / Admininstrative tools, and go into Disk Management. The drive shows up there with a little 'no entry' symbol on it. Right click and there should be an option to activate it. This will enable it.

it's the Zynet CD/DVD Enclosure 5¼" IDE ,aluminium, USB 2.0, linked to in the first post :).

The jumper on the disk is set to primary, and I tried Disk Management but nothing showing up there other than the local drives.

Sorry, the skin I was using doesn't highlight links unless you hover over them. My mistake!

Turn off your PC, attach drive to PC using USB cable, plug in/turn on drive, turn on PC. Now check in Disk Management and see if it is there.

I find external caddies very tempermental and only turn it on when I need something off it.

No luck with that, absolutely nothing from my pc, nothing in boot menu, nothing in disk management.

Had a look at the manual on the Zynet site... nothing out of the ordinary there, as far as I can see. Sorry cult.... I tried! :)

Thanks anyway TmB, looks like it's dodgy. Gah I can't afford to send this back either.

Oh well, I will endeavour to make it a pretty ornament.

The unit in the enclosure should be set to master. You'd have to open it to check that though. Maybe just return it. I never really had a problem with any USB enclosure.
