Re-Format and Re-Install Help

I have windows XP installed on a crappy 8GB 5400 drive and am using a WD 120GB 7200 drive as a slave drive. Both drives are in serious need of re-formating, and I'm going to stop using the 8Gb drive as I have another 60GB drive I'm not using.

I know I can backup all my documents, pictures, emails etc, on DVD and copy them over after I re-install windows. The problem is with the programs and games I have installed. I don't want to have to go through dozens of CD's to re-install all the games, and lose any saved data, or try to find original program from the net, new driver software etc. Basically I want to know is there any way to copy my registry onto the new hard drive.

I am vaguely familiar with a hard drive image, but not sure exactly how this works. Obviously I couldn't burn 60GB on a DVD, so can I span multiple DVD's? My gf has her computer networked to mine with a 120GB drive (about 90GB free) Is there a way to save a hard drive image on her PC, then load it back on mine. Is there software that can do this (Norton Ghost Perhaps?) I don't want to re-format if its going to mean losing programs I don't have install files for, or swapping disks and typing product keys for 2 days.

    Any help is appreciated.

A reinstall would be a better thing to do to be honest. But you can image it with ghost or similar.

Can't you just save the drive image to the slave drive?
You then boot with a Norton Ghost/Powerquest Drive Image (hmm, looks like symanteec bought powerquest, so there might be no competition any more) CD and restore the image from the slave drive onto the new 60 Gig master (all hail).
