Probably. Check the web for firmware upgrades for the specific model.

In the 'Welcome' text, there's a program that enables it without altering your hardware. Maybe try that, as there's no risk of it breaking your drive.

i'm also looking to make my optical drive region free.
i've checked the manuals etc that came with my laptop but it doesn't mention what type of dvd/cdr drive i have.
are there any programs to find out the exact drive/model, so i can d/l the firmware?

    it's an Acer 2010wlci

Does it not say in Device manager? (right click on my computer, properties)
Or else right-click on My computer, manage, storage, removable storage, libraries, right-click on the drive and properties, Device Information. You should have Model (self-explanatory) and Revision (the firmware version).

Alernatively, Everest will probably tell you.

how do i find out whether it's Primary/Secondary/Master/Slave?

i presume it's the same for all laptops so what's the usual location?

not actually sure how this applies to a laptop, as I don't think there are IDE cables/jumpers, unless they're very small. When you first boot up, often on the BIOS screen you see a list of master/slave devices appearing.
