US Outlaws Medical use of the WEED

The US supreme court, populated by american conservatives has out lawed the use of Marijuana for medical reasons. Although I do not agree with the idea of blanket legalisation I do support the medical agrument. It is however ironic that a conservative america should outlaw the possibility of its medical benefits being used when they elected a President who had a coke and drink addiction!

What's really stupid is that other drugs *are* allowed, and cannabis/weed are not - double standards.

In an interesting side-note, a friend of mine is a nurse and pointed out to me that anyone who has ever spent more than a day in Intensive-Care is an addict. Morphine is an opiate, and *very* addictive[1].

I watched the Congressional debate from the embassy along with some close friends in the community- it distressed me greatly to say the least. Some of you may remember my standpoint ont the medical use of cannabis in a previous thread (and the completely irrelevant philosophical debate that resulted with Excel ) and I haven't changed my stance.

To make an individual choice about treatment involving alternative medicine is one thing- a blanket ban? That's an infringement of my rights as I see it...cannabis has been legal for medical use in the US for almost 20 years- this is truly a step back for George "W.4nk0r" Bush- and one that hardly surprises me. If the fool isn't prepared to handle executive power repsonsibly- he will soon be removed as a significant force- either via the 12th Amendment, or with the checks and balances that will arise when he loses the Senate and the House to an angry electorate.

As one of the "stupid yanks" Trojan refers to- I can categorically state that I didn't vote for him- I voted for McCain, and then Liberatarian.

One more thing- there's no need to despair just yet- the Supreme court may have ruled in a leading case- but many legal challenges still exist before the ruling becomes part of accepted US Common Law. "Precedent is an elastic concept, mitigated by truth and the legislature" as Lincoln once said...so let's not lose hope yet
