    Hellooo -

I love Classical music, I love opera, Id listen to a full opera and then change to Black Market Music - Placebo - I love tuneful music, dance music, rock music, rhythm....basically the point is I love everything (except Country and Western) - Is the case (especially in Dublin) these days, that we all must be in a 'cool' rock/metal band - what happened to experimenting with everything - I love a good rock concert but thats no reason that all other genres should be ignored is it?!
Imagine the combination of an operatic tune against a rock base line with an irish rhythm (ok sounds a bit whacky but hey it could be the next big thing) -
Anyway I was hoping someone could enlighten me or else disappoint me but tell me that the maybe the 'music scene' in Ireland isnt so limited?!
be great to talk to someone who has a clue what I mean...........see ya!!

Hmmm, that sounds a bit like a Eurovision entry to me.

I do agree with you though, there's no variety in the Dublin scene, bands are either a heavy rock/metal influenced band or else a Frames tribute act. There are other types of music being played but you never hear about it, all the major venues seem to be too afraid to take a risk.

yyyeup neddy old boy - zap me on:
    bow_down_and_worship_me@hotmail.com

I might have just the thing you're looking for, so that you don't have to say: "I still haven't found.......what I'm looking for".
Also I think country music has got a very bad rap. Just don't play it backwards, or your wife will return to you, you'll get your job back (at Burger King), and your long dead good old dog Mr Flumpers will rise from the grave and try to make his way home!!!

I posted this not long ago -> so for more information:

    "More Information
Influences: Rock, Pop, Blues, Experimental, Rock&Roll, Jazz, Country, Irish, 'outsider'.

The music I write takes its inspiration from all of the above and more; and harmony etc. from academic music. I try out all sorts of ideas to develop my music. You might say it sounds crazy, but it isn't wilful experimentation, because I have no interest in listening to that or making an artistic statement for the sake of it.
I intend to make a career in the industry, but not by conforming etc etc. However I am taking a risk with it, because it is probably not 'normal' music, so if you want to be in a safe band, this isn't it. If you are into bizarre and possibly disturbing stage spectacles too, that would be fine.

I am looking to form a band and play live as soon as it would be possible. Initially maybe just acoustic, because band members are hard to find etc. Ideally you might be able to sing too, with an original voice. Or to just write Lyrics to music and develop a songwriting collaboration would be fine. I have already recorded one E.P., this with a different flavour (prog rock?), with a and a copy of this is available on request.

I play the guitar, not very well, but inventively. I also do vocals, and play bass guitar and keyboards."

Are we talking Gavin Friday/ Virgin Prunes kind of outsider?

Take away the Irish rhythm part you got Meatloaf...ugh.

Have you ever listened to Kila? Havannah Che? they're mixing different types of music together and doing it really well to and they've played around Dublin alot. I mean all you have to do is go to a Jazz gig in JJ Smyths and you'll see musicians fusing different styles....

But ehh yeah forget the operatic Irish rock...ugh

It all comes down to the fact that nearly every band around is fundamentaly a guitar based one. Most bands have their songs written by guitarists who have no concept of writing music outside their own instrument, i mean that they wouldnt be able to write a melody line for another instrument. That results in most music sounding like guitarists just lashing out chords or riffs. Note that I only said most cos there is plenty of bands out there who are well able to create original intelligent music.

That's rubbish. I know a lot of guitarists that can write outside there instrument including me.

Ever hear of Johnny Greenwood? You know Radiohead, string arranging etc...

    What a dumb statement.

I only said most not everyone, and obviously i didnt mean you cos you must be deadly. And the thread was about the music scene in dublin i thought. I dont think radiohead are a dublin band.

Also if you had a longer attention span you might have got to the end of the post where i said, "Note that I only said most cos there is plenty of bands out there who are well able to create original intelligent music."

O.k point taken, but if you stay around Temple Bar all the time all you'll ever hear is the sound of Eamon Dorans bad Metal/Rock...don't get me wrong it's a good place to play starting off, but you could never take a risk there or you'd never get a gig there again...(like the time I tried to play free jazz there) it was very amusing!

Anyway...go to JJ Smyths...sometimes the Mez has some good stuff...check entertainment.ie for different gigs and I'm sure you'll find something interesting... on last point...

A rocker listener will have very little time to listen to music outside their genre of interest therefore a band creating "different" music will have to generate a "different" audience...that will take time

I agree entirely, what I was talking about was bands who are trying to get off the ground.

A good place to start for bands would be the Boom Boom room, the audience there is usually pretty open minded to alot of different styles...I don't really know of anywhere else that would be good to play really....any suggestions anyone...could be a good reference for new bands.

'Outsider' music -> ala The Shaggs, Shooby Taylor, Syd Barret, Captain Beefheart, William Shatner. That sort of thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I thought you meant outsider music like outsider art (ie made by mental patients and prisoners).
