Old kids film

Does anyeon know the name of this film or even remember it, I was quite young when it came out.

It was an animated film ( dont think it was Disney) it had some talking dogs that I think were form a different dimension that were trying to get home. They could talk / I think.

They end up in a pound and the kid picks the scruffy looking one to take home and he gets caught up in the adventure trying to get them home.

The end had them going through some mystical door, possibly on the top of a hill or in a lightning storm or something.

As I said it was a long time ago and my memory of it is a little vague.

I remember the film but not the name. Neither of the 2 films above but would have been released in the 80's or very late 70's. Wasn't there some kind of beast on the other side of the door too. A dragon if i remember right but i was a kid too.
