    Hi,
1- I'm about to go to Dun Laoghaire to try out the wi-fi in a 50m radius from the mentioned phone box on the eircom site. Will it work at this time? Do I need anything attached to my pc? What should I make sure of before I go? Will I be charged for this?
    -**SOLVED**-
Turns out all I had to do was press a little button with a picture of a mast transmitting signals that is just beside the power button on myh laptop, that turned the "radio" on:)

2- Why is ISS PRO EVOLUTION 3 not performing smoothly on my Centrino Gericom Ego Notebook if the recommended requirements are:
    Windows XP
    P4 1.5ghz
    DirectX8.1
GeForce4 with VRAM 64mb or more
    Main Mem: 256MB or more
    HD: 3gb or more
    Sound Card 100% Directx8.1 compliant
    DVD ROM DRIVE

Supported chipsets : ATI RADEON 9700 (what I have)

I have tried change the quality to low but it still stalls when I pass the ball orr when there are many people in the box for a corner etc.

I was advised to get a patch when my cd drive had problems with copyright protection, I got another patch that did the trick and loaded the game, but the original patch I was advised to get said it fixed the stuttering problem. I installed the said patch and unfortunately It had the same copyright protection issue so I had to revert back to the other nocd crack. So I don't think I can have best of both worlds????

3- After installing XP pro and instalking drivers for laptop, it says on driver autorun screen that I need to get USB 2.0 software from internet.... where?
-**SOLVED**- Deleted USB devices from device manager and rebooted (I also reinstalled SP2 before rebooting, not sure if that made a difference though)

4- My screen on laptop is quite shaky when typing etc, its meant to be like that, any tips to make it less shaky?

5- I dont have the green little arrow in the taskbar any more to remove my USB modem and it doesn't appear for my PS2 Controller to USB adaptor either. Is it ok to just plug these USB cables out with the modem still on and the controller still connected? It only appears when I connect my iRiver IHP-140 (external hard drive/mp3 player)
    thanks!!!
    -**SOLVED**-
Apparatnly it doesn't matter if you press the disconnect thing or not so that's ok! and A PS2 to USB adaptor and a USB modem isn't really going to lose any information if I do plug out:)

6- How do I find out the speed of my DVD-+RW drive with the above laptop? I'm burning a DVD now of some MPG files and it will take 50mins overall to burn about 700MB out of 4.7 GB or so.
-**SOLVED**-Well, not solved, but I don't really need to know what the speed is. what took 50 minutes was not the burning.

Check the cds wich came with your laptop - if you have service pack one installed they should get installed by os - Or else check on the manufactures site for drivers and download the usb driver.

Have you installed the drivers for the 9700???

Probally has to do something with your usb driver not installed!

    Hi
    Thanks for reply,

This is my 2nd time installing Windows Pro on the laptop, the first time, as far as I remember, I installed Service Pack 1 and then Service Pack 2, I think after installing SP1, it recognised the 2.0 speed. However, this time, I just installed SP2 without SP1. So what can I do? Should I have installed SP1 and then SP2 like the last time?

When I say the screen is shaky, I mean the physical screen, as in the screws holding the screen up ;)

follow on from Q-6 Ok apparantly, 47 minutes was spent "Creating Menus and transcoding streams" and the burning is only taking about 4-5 minutes. Does this seem right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

yup, that sounds grand. If it was taking 50 mins to burn 700mb, you'd have to have a burner that was burning at less than 1x, a LOT less.

Thanks, unfortunately it didn't actually burn anything on the CD, it only made an image file. I cant get it to burn to the DVD, when I start NERO - BURNING ROM a pop up box asks me to choose the type of medium to burn:

    CD

    DD CD(whats that??)

    DVD

each option has a check box but only the CD option is available to click and I can't choose DVD. Why is this?

Any idea about the other questions?

Would it be inadvisable to install SP1 over SP2 and then install SP2 over SP1 to get the USB2.0 working?

Also, in the NERO InfoTool it says ASPI is not installed in the ASPI tab.

And in the DRIVE tab it says TYPE: DVD-R/RW combo drive and supported READ and Write features have +R check boxes which I cannot check even though on the box of my ego it says it is + and -!! ??

The Windows service packs are cumulative. That means that SP2 contains everything that was in SP1 plus a whole loada new stuff. If you are installing Sevice Packs you just install the newest one. You don't install SP1 and then install SP2, that would be pointless. There's a bucketload of new updates for XP that came out after SP2 so you'd need them as well to be fully up to date.
A service pack release is when Microsoft packages all the updates to that time into a single bundle for convenience. For example since SP2 for XP came out I've had to do the following updates:
(KB=Knowledge Base as in Microsoft Knowledge Base)
    KB884020
    KB873374
    KB816093
    KB885884
    KB834707
    KB873339
    KB885835
    KB885836
    KB886185
    KB887797
plus an Update for Windows Media Connect
That is just for WinXP not even counting updates for Office.
In a year or two this many individual updates can get quite unwieldy which is why they bundle them as a Service Pack. They are a pain keeping up but it's the only way to have a reasonably secure windows pc.

Well if you have got a USB 2.0 capable hub/ports in your pc, then installing either SP1 or SP2 should give the required USB 2.0 support, I'd be surprised if that wasn't all that was needed as virtually anytime I have looked up USB 2.0 drivers that was what the tech support of the product suggested.
On the ISS Pro thing, I don't know that much about the game specifically, having never played it, but just as a thought, are you perhaps using the Microsoft supplied drivers that came with XP for your 9700 graphics? If you are then you should change to a recent version of the ATI Catalyst drivers as MS own graphics drivers tend to be crap, lacking OpenGL amongst other things. I don't even know if the game uses Open GL but either way change if you are using MS drivers.
If you have Nero DVD/CD writing software you may have another part of the suite called Nero Drivespeed that would tell you what speeds the DVDRW supports. Other than that just Google the name of the DVDRW model as shown in System Properties/Hardware/Device Manager for info on it.

Nifty :) Probably off by default to save juice.

The best thing to do is if the green thing ever appears on your computer, go into the items properties and disable the setting called "write behind" or something like that.

There should be an option to optimize for speed or fast removal, choose fast removal. That way you can always pull it out whenever you want, without windows throwing a fit and crashing. Ok, so if you are transferring data when you decide to plug it out, you won't actually transfer the data :p, but at least windows won't bork like it usually would if you pull something out with "safely removing" it.

Ok, I'll try set that up, thanks!! anyone have any ideas regarding the Peo Evo issue? thanks!

As regards the game. My advice is to install it, and patch it up to the version that fixes the issues you have. Then use Alcohol 120% to make an image of the disc. Then mount the image (in a non-sexual manner) and emulate the copy protections and you should have no problem running the game. Unless of course, you don't have an original disc :p

Hi, That sounds interesting, do you think it would work? How would I deal with the copyright issues on the copy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭carbsy

I can confirm that the QSI DVD drive in this laptop is a 2x DVD-R and 16x CD-R.I can't comment for the + formats as I don't use those.

P.S. As regards the game, it's bugged beyond belief. There are hundreds on threads about it on the net regarding various issues.Change to v4 instead. :)

    Thanks,
I have #4 for the playstation 2, I'd like it for the PC but I don't want to spend the money if it's not going to play as properly and as well as the playstation version, it would be allot handier as I would be able to play it on my laptop wherever I want. I might just get a lend of somebody and test it.

What do you think the chances are of it running slow on my ego? thanks

Tbh, the only game I've been playing since I got my Ego (hoho) is Football Manager 2005 and it's sweet. :)

Pro evo is the only game I ever play. In my oppinion its the best game ever. I like a game you can just switch on and play for about 10 mins and not have to get stuck into for hours (like Zelda, Ocarina of time, I played that back in the day, great but not really into game anymore). I'm not even into football, I've always loved ISS though and pro evo is a gem :D especially to play with friends!
