Check Your Ego! (laptop replacement has same problem)

I bought a Gericom Ego laptop in Aldi on the 27th, it all seemed fine except when I installed ISS Pro Evolution Soccer 3, it installed ok but when I went to play it, it did nothing and wouldn't load it up. It played music CD's, DVD's and installed Windows XP pro off the CD ok but it wouldn't play this game.

The game loads ok on my current laptop which is a P3 Compaq Evo N110 with XP Pro installed on it.

I went back to Aldi and got a replacement yesterday, I turned the laptop on in the car on the way home to test the game. SAME PROBLEM! Very annoying!

Has anyone any idea of what to do? I could probably get a full refund but then I wont be able to get as good a deal again probably.

If you have an Ego and this game, could you let me know if it runs ok?
    thanks!

First step would be getting the latest drivers for the gfx card.

How? I tried the "download latest drivers" button on the hardware device manager and it says I have the latest?? Why would it not play but it would play in my p3 though?

usually a driver fault. might take time to resolve it. sure if it doesnt play it doesnt play. at the end of the day it was a very very good deal.

i have a targa 1300 and remember when SP2 BETA or even media player 9 or 10 was realeased the screeen flushed red every now and then for no reason. with the non beta installed or windows player removed it was fine.
now theve fixed it with the new non beta sp2.

try installing it on a partioned drive other than c drive. try compatibility mode.
could be an sp2 conflict. sometimes windows security settings affect it turn everything off, windows firewall etc.

then see if there is a later game update available. id say its a centrino / gfx conflict.

Do you reckon hold on to it? I just don't want this to be a problem for the future. Like I have pro EVO 4 for the PS2 but just the fact I know there is a problem bugs me.

    Does SP2 = service pack 2?

if you guys recommend to keep it I will, I don't know much about this kind of thing myself just that I was told by fellow boardsters that its a great deal.

it is a very good deal if u needed a laptop. really was. see if u have the latest game patches check this and other sites first
    http://downloads.soccergaming.com/download.php?id=00008781

i doubt if its broken or anything.

yep sp2=service pack 2. try turning off the firewall in control panel/security settings.

Yeah, that doesn't actually work. Go to the manufacturer's (of the gfx card) website and download the latest drivers for your card. You should also check the game's site for any patches.
Why would it not play but it would play in my p3 though?
Different types of hardware can just have compatibility problems. Some games have issues when running with certain gfx/sound cards. Depending on the source of the problem, a patch for the game is created or the gfx card drivers are updated.

Sounds good, thanks for the replies. It'll be about 2-3 hours before I get the chance to try these options. I'll let you know how I get on then! thanks again:)

Ok, am I imagining things or did you not point out a link where it was stated to be a common problem lomb? I'm sure I read that in one of your replies, and when I turned on the Ego and connected and came to this thread, it's not there.. I don't have a security tab in control panel. How do I turn off firewall? thanks!

EDIT: Also, how do I find out who makes my graphics card and their website and which driver to get? thanks!

sorry i mistook boot problem (what u have) with extra boots haha sorry so i withdrew that particular post.

what u need to do is go to gericoms website firstly and get the VGA driver for the ati 128mb card. download that first.
then download the latest games patches all of them theres a link above but there may be another one from the game manufacturer.
failing that try the latest vga driver from atis site but ul need to know exactly what card u have. definately try gericoms site first.

ok ur stil running sp1. so thats ok (ul need to get sp2 though the web is a dangerous place)

Ok I havent a notion what I'm at, gericom.com doesn't seem to have anything do download from what I can tell.

I think I have an ati mobility radeon 9700!

    Extra boots, haha.

Edit: I don't need SP2 just yet to get this working no? just in general its better to have?

EDIT 2: ive started to download the 9700 section on this page:
    http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/winxp/radeonwdm-xp.html?type=xp&prodType=graphic&prod=productsXPdriver&submit.x=10&submit.y=5

EDIT 3: Just tried to install the above, it said error, no video support or something and then it said try installing a standard VGA driver before doing that installation.. what the/???

yep only need it generally not for game to get it working u can do this later.

although saying that ati saYs this :ATI recommends Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher to be installed.

best bet is look for a patch for ur game first. find the software writers website.

Konami develope the game. Doesn't seem to be anything there either

Please look at "edit 3" in above post. Any ideas?

have u tried downloading this http://downloads.soccergaming.com/d...php?id=00008781

obiously that wasnt a vga driver u were downloading! something that says u need .net installed cant be a vga driver no way!

anyone else here help him out to find driver?

start by downloading sp2 and installing that anyway, also try patching the game with the above link.

Gericom's drivers are probably outdated anyways (most laptop manufacturers are very tardy updating these things). Those laptops have ATI 9700 Pro graphics chipsets to the best of my knowledge. Unfortunately ATI don't supply drivers for mobile chipsets, they expect you to get them from the manufacturer. Fortunately, you can get some that will do the trick at www.omegadrivers.net .

Ok, I tried that patch, no help, tried omegadrivers, no help.

I don't know if I'm actually downloading the right stuff but I'd say I am.

I had arranged a pick up of my laptop, it will be picked up tomorrow@4pm, I gave them the serial number of the one I got replaced, will that make a difference? Will they be able to solve the problem easier than me? It's going back to Gericom Tech I think! 8 working day wait:(

EDIT: By the way, it says "UNABLE TO AUTENTICATE ORIGINAL DISC WITHIN TIME LIMIT"

sounds like your CD/DVD drive doesn't like the copy protection method used in the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Arghh. So do you think it's the graphics card at all then? It installed it ok though... how would I get around that so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Download a no-cd crack for the game. You do own it so its not illegal.

    I finally got it!!! yeeeha!!!

the above link did work and I was able to download the files but I downloaded another file off emule and there was a crack file that made it work:)

So what does this mean? Just the CD drive had problems with copy protection? Will this pose future problems with many things or is this just a once off do you reckon? thanks for all your help!

Thanks for the reply, but i mean, will it only be effective of copyright protection or could it mean I will have trouble playing CD's I make myself and stuff like that?

Well that's ok then. ISS is the only game I ever play any way so that shouldn't be a problem. And I have the #4 for the PS2, it was just the fact that it wasn't working was bugging me and making me think my spend was a mistake. thanks for the help!
