Ok, i have to have my rant!!

What the fúck do bands/other musicians look for when looking for a guitarist/bandmate of any kind!!???

There are countless bands i have been in contact with over the last few months about possibly joining up.... But as soon as the truth about how often i work comes out(Sun-Weds/10.30am-9pm),, i never hear from them again

I can understand why people wouldn't like my working hours, but surely some people can be a little understanding and possibly accomodating?? I've even had some muppets tellin me that i just must not want it enough, i mean wtf!!

Because i have a well paid job that i don't want to leave because it has good oppurtunities?? This job will be the reason that when i do eventually get into a band, i can afford to book rooms for rehearsal, it's the reason i'll be able to pay for studio time, it's the reason i'll be able to get new gear pretty much when i need it.. Why do people have a problem with this? i can still rehearse at least 3 times a week, and i can still rehearse the other 4 nights a week(if people didn't mind late nights:))

I will have no problem when the time comes to leave my job and devote my time 100% to a band, when the right band comes along, but people really think i'm gonna leave an excellent, well paid job to be in a band that *POSSIBLY* could make *some* kind of name for themselves.

Anyway, that's my rant over with,, it's just soo frustrating not finding 'like minded' musicians..

Sadly that's just the way it is. The hardest part about being in a band is everybody learning to compromise. When you're really into a band it can be hard to keep one eye on the real world. The main problem I can see with your working hours is that you really leave only Thursday to Saturday for gigs and any band who are starting off aren't going to get gigs on those days with any frequency. Monday and Tuesday nights are traditionally the easiest nights for new bands to get gigs and there is nothing worse than having to turn down gigs because of a poxy job. I work 9-5 and have been doing college two evenings a week, as you know, for the last two years and I've had to drop out of a couple of bands when I got so stuck for time that I was compromsing the band's prospects and was unable to commit time to rehearse or gig. It sucks but that's the way it goes, sadly. Are you going to try Part 2 (Monday and Wednesday evenings)?

    newband
what do you play?..you a singer??..i work shifts too and it makes life daaaamm awkward and by the way how old are you??

Mind you i was trying to pull an originals band together over the last 2 years , now setting up a covers classic rock band instead we need a singer etc. BUT the hassle we had tring to get a goood female singer for the originals band was unbelieveable, Ive said it before to some of the guys on here and I'll say it again there are some very sharp players out there, and there are an awful lot of mugs who cant play for **** and they are always looking for bands or trying to set one up,,,in my humble opinion many of them are just damm well " in the way " of decent bands getting set up and playing, and many should go take up knitting instead!
THAT'S My rant hahahah ,,,anyway its a strange thing music over here in many ways the better you are the less folks want you!!,,,many players seem to hate any flambouyance or sharp playing coz their soo damm paranoid of their own playing why????...we can all learn from each other and its damm good fun too. Anyway I luved writing my own lyrics and creating drum parts for the original band, but somehow one or two others just werent as commited and it was extremely frustrating, mainly coz it was damm good music and was deffinatley worth doing, and all the hours i put into drum patterns and lyrics etc ,, terrible pity..just for others to be too buisy to rehears or their cat was sick, or their mates want to go boozing, or whatever drivvee ya mad it would.

SOOO after alll that :: WELCOME TO THE VIBRANT IRISH MUSIC SCENE!!
Im sure some of my comrades on here will agree with most of what I've just said, and maybe in 2 months time finally our new cover outfit will be out and playing..lets hope so!

good luck and ciao' to you other rocking kings Baggio..............

Yeah i get ya,, i think if there were gigs on Monday/tuesday night, i'm not 100% sure, but i reckon i could get off early, i could just start work earlier and get off early..

I have no idea, a few weeks ago i would have said yes, as you know, i posted a while back about maybe getting some studio experience, and i'd love to work in a studio... but it doesn't compare to how much i want to perform!! and the main reason in the first place to do the course is so i could learn how to record my own stuff a pofessionally as possible..... But the good thing about pulse is that if i don't do the Part 2 next year, then i'll have the option to do it the year after that and so on..

But there are so many things i want to do, i was thinking of going to newpark in Blackrock, may learn some jazz and classical, improve on my playing ability as well learning different styles.. I was also thinking of doing a degree in Music as a mature student, i got an email from the head of Music in Trinity and he said that they do take as many mature students as possible, but i don't know what i would do after that tbh..

and i was also thinking of doing an Open University course,, maybe in Music or possibly in Phsycology..

So as you can see i'm a little confused at the moment, but i'm at a good age to be planning ahead...

What do you want to do after the course, you're married aren't you, so i assume you have a mortgage? is pulse a hobby to you or are you trying to start a new career?

I play guitar, 21yrs old.. i personally think i'm a competent player, i've been playing almost 4 years, but i definitely think there is room for improvement, which is my main reason to want to go to newpark.. After i have been playing for about 2 years my brother basically told me that i was better then him, and a good few players he knows, he's been playing for about 10 years now.. but to be honest i can't really say how good i am, because i've never really been in a 'band' for long enough to find out.. i've never really been challenged!!

*edit* ooooh,, my new name just kicked in :D !!

I'm hoping to change career, but I'm not in the position to be able to not work, got bills which have to be paid so it isn't going to be easy. I still want to play though, I love to play and I love to write music and ideally I'd love to be able to combine the two but it isn't going to be easy. I'd really like to get into producing, rather than straight up engineering, I think it's something I'd be very good at but how to get involved is a mystery, a lot of bands aren't into having a stranger analyse and try to help their music and sound, especially at a new band level. Meh, I'll see what I can do :)

Yeah,, if i was going to get into that side of music then the plan was to just get some experience and start up my own studio.. unless you have some decent contacts to get a full time slot as the house engineer of windmill lane(not likely) then i reckon your best off startin up a studio, make a name for yourself with the local bands, get a bit of a rep and build on it from there.. however i wouldn't even know where to start to go into Producing, obviously you'd have to start off as an engineer but after that it gets kind of unclear!!

AFAIK the music degree in TCD is very very academic as opposed to musical. You of course do composition classes and workshops but from what I can tell the emphasis is on music that sounds better on paper than it does in playing. I think their favourite composers are John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. I'd look into that before I'd commit to a degree. Of course you may like that sort of music but I know most people hate it so be warned.

Its a new year - so new things can now happen - music is like anything in life - you have to find sound people that will be understanding of your situation - I finished my music degree there in may and im now working a 9-5 too - it just has to be done - Im as confused as anyone - I want to sing so much and Im dying to get into something new - alot of my experience is classical but my interests are across the board - also I want to travel - so its hard to get everything fitted in - a job everyday to...pay the bills and then time for music - so whats out there that new then, lets finish the ranting and see if we can get anywhere - ??
