I don't see any cons to it really, and it looks good. Much faster than Hotmail, and easier to use.

Google snooping on your email worries some people.

I find the UI (user interface) of gmail nice. Most of the screen space is devoted to your email (that's why you're at the page, to see you email, not some ads). I use it for active mailing lists, so it's ability to group conversation is very convient.

Why did they offer a gig? Because no one else was it was a very good way to enter the email market with a bang.

Don't you have to relinquish all rights to your emails to google? And you're not allowed to delete them?

There's one thing allowing a company to store your email, but letting them use them for whatever purpose they see fit is a bit.. eh. I dunno. I don't entirely trust google.

Look Cork Skate - are you bored over the Xmas or something? Its a silly topic of conversation. There are plenty of email providers now that offer 1Gb or more of storage spage. Its up to you whether you want to go with them or not.

All the pros and cons have been discussed many a time before here - your searching didnt work too well. To recap :

Pros: lots of space and searching through conversations )plus other funky little things)Cons: ads (although targeted)

having no regular delete function is:

advertising the fact that you get so much space you don't need to

    or

preventing you from deleting valuable marketing information about you

you can delete mail by declaring it to be spam first if there is something you would rather not have on your account.

ui and manner of storage is far preferable to yahoo/hotmail etc imo

Is "Move to Trash" not their definition of delete???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Yeah you can just move it to trash, and then empty trash. - then it is deleted.

Also, as of a couple of months ago you can now POP and SMTP through gmail (without needing 3rd party programs such as pop goes the gmail, etc). You just have to log in to gmail and enable it in your preferences.

I use Gmail's smtp server rather than my ISP's one, as it automatically puts mail i send into my gmail sent mail folder - very handy as I can only pop mail from home, when I'm in college or elsewhere i use the webmail.

    Pros:
Gmail notifier & broadband means you get your email just as well as having a mail client running on your machine, except that all your mail is online - you can check it from anywhere. I've switched all of my mail usage to gmail now, and it's great.

Threaded mails: Easily the best idea I have seen in a long, long time. The mails are organised into one thread on the same topic. Infinitely better than having fifty mails on the same topic taking up the first two pages of new mail.

    Cons:
If you forget to set up filters, and have a large amount of mail, it's very easy to lose a particular mail. Filters combined with labels are great, but sometimes you haven't a clue what is and isn't in your mailbox.
Don't you have to relinquish all rights to your emails to google? And you're not allowed to delete them?
You can delete them. Very few people own the right to their mails. Anyone who uses webmail or work email has already essentially given away the right to their mail and their privacy within their mail. Even some ISPs "own" your mail. There are some rights to your mail that can't be avoided by any contract or agreement you click on with Google, but it's no worse than your work email or hotmail, in terms of privacy.

Only con I have come across is that you are limited to 10MB attachment per mail.

Other then that its all pro.
