i have put in an ATI graphics card but how can i get the pc to recognise that the graphics should be going through this card... im flying blind here.. theres no graphic signal on the monitor at all..

Well simply plugging in a card should be enough. Is it an AGP card, does it need power, is it in right?

possible problem.... might it be that im using a VGA monitor and not a super VGA monitor.. i borrowed a old gateway monitor off a mate, but im not sure if its super vga... and super is required for this card... if it was just a vga monitor, would i get no signal from the card??

No, the SVGA resolutions would only come into effect in Windows. At startup you should be able to see stuff like the Bios messages and so forth. Sometimes this type of thing although it seems the video card is actually caused by something else. Common things to try would be reseating the memory, cpu etc. especially the memory, it often causes things like this.

If you have more than one ram stick, try one at a time.

You could try testing the new gfx card on an old working pc?

Most Gateway monitors had a tiny led on the left. If it is orange you have no signal from the pc, if it is green check the monitor brightness setting. If there is no light the monitor is dead or unplugged.

id say checking the ram would be an idea, does it matter which slot i test the ram on.. is there a no1 and no2 slot or will either do?

Bet you're relieved now! Had the same trouble myself when building my own.

    Happy Computing! :D
