I have a computer where I need to reinstall Windows. I only have an external cd drive, not an internal cd drive. Can I still use this for installing Windows or do I need to get an internal as well so it can be initialized properly?

    Thanks!!

Do you have a floppy drive. Maybe you can make a boot disk to boot off and load the driver for the external drive. have you tried google the name of your drive and loading windows. you could copy the cab files from the OS cd , boot of a bootable floppy and run the setup or winnt

    Is the drive USB?
Your BIOS might support booting from it, check the cmos setup options.

Why not just setup the boot sequence in the bios to

    1. FLOPPY
    2. CD-ROM
    3. HARD DISK

Put the windows CD into the drive, reboot and if it detects the external drive than you shouldn't have any probs.

Thanks everybody for the help! Finally I could get resuscitate the computer by "simply" running scanreg. It detected some configuration errors with the registers and repaired it, so now it's working just fine again!

Thanks for all contributions to this thread.

The external driver is USB and it could't be found by the computer.

I had a floppy disk and I found a downloadable start disk for my OS, Win ME, on the net... So that made my day...

    Happy new year!!

Happy new year to you too !

Glad it worked. It's always worth having a bootdisk for XP/98 hanging around somewhere :)
