At the moment I'm looking for amp/cassette deck and maybe speakers. Maybe even if CD player even. But has to be very cheap. Might trade in some other gear I have. If anywhere does that kinda stuff.

the current trend with seperates is to get a good dvd player with either digital optical out or digital co-ax and make sure the amp has either in. that way you can have the bones of the audio of a home theatre system (esp. if it's a 6 channel amp.) and a cd deck that plays mp3s, wmas etc

Good tip thanks. This is for archiving my cassette collection though. A good cassette deck is what I'm after. But if it could play a decent CD or two then excellent.

I have a spare Aiwa cassete deck. It is about 7 years old, but it was hardly used because I bought a mini disk deck shortly after. In case you are interested, what gear do you have for trading?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,693 ✭✭✭Zynks

Just found the manual, so here are the details on the deck:

    Model: AD-F460
Tape type supported: Metal, normal, chrome (switch selection)
    Recording volume control
Noise reduction Dolby HX Pro B and C
Track format: 4 tracks, two channels
    Bias calibration for high frequencies

If you need more technical details let me know.

I think I also have a spare adaptor to connect the deck directly to PC for recording.

    hey mate

Cloney Audio do used stuff. They're in Blackrock.

Otherwise buy and sell is a good bet.

I thought Cloney Audio only do high end stuff. Mega expensive etc. I'm on a tight budget. Maybe I'm wrong. Zynks - I'll pm you.

Well they have that reputation but they dont just sell megabucks stuff. And they do take in stuff so you never know what you might pick up there - you could always give them a ring and see what they have in stock.

One of the things to be wary of when buying second hand cassette decks is the condition and alignment of the heads. Have you tried Richer sounds site to see what sort of prices they have on cassette decks?

Good tips. To be honest I was thinking there must be some decent unwanted old stereo gear around, as people move to multi channel AV and more modern systems. I only want it to archive old cassettes and I probably won't use it that much afterwards. I only need a amp/cassette deck maybe speakers just for load and as monitors. But I take your point about the condition of the decks. I wouldn't know how to check the alignment of the heads to be honest. I've a lot of music on cassettes. A lot of poor quality but I'd hate to lose it, and much of it isn't available on CD or was my own live recordings of various bits and bobs.

This thread is moving off bargains and more into home theatre. Maybe a mod should move it?

not necessarily - you might be able to pick up a cheap amp there :)

Seem to be light years away from my budget. Can you call no money a budget? :D

well they dont do free stuff - but they usually have more then they put up in their used stock. You might be able to pickup an old Arcam amp or something.
    :)

my bet would be to get a simple cassette player, with a line out connector and patch it through the computer, even burning Software like Nero have Audio enhancement tools in them, like the classic dehissing and stuff.
don't think a HiFi cassette deck should be a requirement.

I've been mucking about with difference cassette units I have at home, and different sound cards and different cleanup apps. To be honest it seems to make a big difference how good the source signal is. Any processing you do afterwards especially cleaning it up you do lose "something". Sometimes its worth it, sometimes it isn't. Theres also a certain amount of trial and error which is time consuming.

For example if I record onto a sharp MD I get a better sound, and sounds like its cleaner but it changes and colours the sound. If I use a Sony MD its more true to the original but doesn't sound as good and sound noiser. In fact it just hasn't done as much processing on the sound.

As to which process is better I dunno.

Not in hifi audio - thats purely for home cinema use.

No stereo amps will have a digital in.

DVD players sound worse then dedicated CD players too.

Yup - source always has a huge affect!
If you want the best quality copies, a cassette deck to MD deck connected by fairly decent interconnects will see the truest possible copies.

An alternative is to get a different soundcard and record on the PC.

You wouldnt happen to be going over to the UK soon would you - that'll see you set if you do - there are hifi places with cassette decks for £30.

have you thought of buying from ebay?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,264 ✭✭✭RicardoSmith

I might do that, Connect directly. Going to UK or using eBay is too much hassle unless I had a bigger budget to spend/
