rtf with index in openoffice

yet another question When I use OpenOffice to open an RTF/DOC made with Word, the index is no longer interactive, i.e., clicking on the page number, although grey, doesn't jump me to the corresponding page/chapter. Is this just the way it is with OO or do I need to activate some feature?
