I'm having a lot of trouble getting my PC to play avi files. Some files work fine, but it's often the case when I download an avi that I try to open it in Media Player, which says in the bottom bar 'Sending Request for Codec', 'Contacting Codec Server', 'Error downloading codec', before playing just the audio with no video.
Winamp also plays the audio with no video. Quicktime gives me a message that I may have trouble viewing the video because the required compressor could not be found, and it too plays the audio with no video.
I've had this trouble with a number of avi files from lots of sources.

Eg. the movies in this thread, I can play the large ones just fine but the small ones give me that problem.

Any suggestions?

Either strip out and uninstall all your existing codecs then install ONE codec pack (k-lite codec pack springs to mind) or jusy install vlc player which uses its own codecs to play the files.

You may have loads of different codecs installed that could be conflicting with each other.

get a program unfortunately called gspot. you open up the avi with that program and it tells you what codecs are needed for the file. then you go and download them. and you'll need divx (lite without the spyware), xvid and ac3filter to start with of course

never let windows media player look for codecs on the internet. it never works. in fact don't use it. use real alternative. it can play real player files and just about all others

Ok it was DivX codecs that were needed and they worked.
Thanks for the help, I didn't realise DivX files were also avi's, I thought they had their own filetype.

best thing i thought was ffd show....do a search on google....played all my files through media player once installed.
